"Robot security guards are staples of most futuristic sci-fi movies, video games and TV shows. They exist in real life as well, though the sight of a security robot patrolling the streets is far from common."

"If the K5 does detect that an "incident" is occurring, it makes all of its sensor data publicly available via Wi-Fi, "to allow the entire community to review the information transparently and contribute additional relevant, real-time information," Knightscope representatives said.
Crowdsourced crime investigations have their pros and cons, as anyone who followed the immediate aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing knows well. Using Twitter, Boston residents were able to inform others about the events surrounding the attack and help identify the alleged bomber, but not before an innocent person was publicly named as a suspect. Presumably, the K5's software will be able to sift through crowdsourced data to find the most valuable information."

"What's more, Knightscope representatives said the K5 will be able to save money. The robot operates at a cost of about $6.25 per hour, the New York Times reports more than a dollar below the U.S. minimum hourly wage."
Yeah for the NSA and employers, booooo for security guards!

(12,041 posts)The plot was not just about robots, it was also about private corporations taking over public services. The movie basically represents the teabagger vision for the future, its satire holds up better today than it did when the movie was released 30 years ago.

(13,409 posts)It has become even more relevant over time. I originally was dead set against it being remade, but the trailer looks kind of promising.

(12,041 posts)Maybe I will be disappointed in the end, but I am going to remain optimistic because this is a character that needs to be brought back.
People need to understand that this is not a remake, the director said that he wants the original to stand on its own and he is not trying to copy it or compete with it. Nobody considers Batman Begins to be a remake even though it is retelling the Batman origin story which had already been told in past films. Robocop is handling the story similar to how Batman Begins brought that character back to the screen, they are telling the story in such a different way than it has been told before and it should be viewed as its own film rather than a remake.
The original movie is a classic and it will always be a classic, the new movie can bring this character to a new audience however and as long as it keeps the spirit of what made the original so great I will be happy.

(13,409 posts)The reason I was originally opposed to it was because I thought the series went out on a positive note with Robocop 3 (although watching it again as an adult, it doesn't hold up to the first two, especially the first). Batman Begins was years after the disastrous Bay/Schumacher Batman films, so I was really looking forward to a reboot after those left such a bad taste in my mouth.
I think we're in need of a good fascist parable right now.

(24,135 posts)I'm getting real sick of the bullies and trigger happy cops.
At a Occupy event I spoke to a couple of policemen while they sat in their car.
They referred to the protestors as "scumbags" and other choice names.
I said, wow I've never been called a scumbag...Oh not you Mame, them..
There were regular people of all ages ...
