Is Utah really THAT conservative?

The only people I read about having a fit over the judge's same-seas marriage ruling are Republcian politicians and LDS leaders, but not from the average Utahan. I know there are pockets of deep, deep red, but Salt Lake City elected a progressive mayor not long ago. Is Utah truly united against marriage equality?

as the M$M and conservative talking heads try to display. All too often, though, real progressivism doesn't win out until enough people are personally affected by regressive RW policies. That's due to the empathy deficiency that most conserves seem to have IMHO.

I think the population is more liberal than who represents 'em, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to alter their votes all that much.

Take Mike Lee, he is roundly been criticized by people and his approval ratings are in the dumps. Yet, unless Matheson runs against him in 2016, he's likely to win reelection. I think, when you get down to it, Utahns are for the status quo more than anything.

The state is aided by Salt Lake City - which makes it different than typical conservative states. SLC is truly a progressive city with a large gay population that has changed the dynamics of the area the last 20 years.

Culturally, I think Utah is more liberal than in the 80s. Even if, when you get down to it, it still is pretty conservative.

And have made two cross country trips by car. One of my favorite cities especially for Gay bars is Salt Lake City. Go figure.

Every state in the US is made up of a population of people, no two of which agrees 100% with each other. Utah has Republicans and Democrats as citizens. Depending on where you go, their proportions vary. There are many Utah residents who are rejoicing over this court decision. There are others who are railing against it. Neither group is Utah. Utah is a state, not a philosophy. Philosophies are held by people.
