is OK by me. But I'm seeing posts painting a not-so-pretty picture as far as equality and women, and need to read up more -- a lot more.

I support Pope Francis's call for better economic justice. I oppose his position on many other social justice and equality issues. I oppose the Roman Catholic Church on many grounds.

I can't vote in your poll, though.

And I expect him to 'evolve' like President Obama did about gay rights. I expect him to also evolve about women's roles in the Church. I'm an optimist who has seen many things that once seemed impossible happen. Like having a Black President.

sarah palin thinks he sounds "kinda liberal", but rest assured-- she'll do her own homework to better reinterpret his words. And rush limbaugh...? “Somebody has either written this for him or gotten to him... This is just pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the pope.”

And over at Fox news, we can read, "Pope Francis is the Catholic Church’s Obama – God help us!" and the deliciously ironic "He (the Pope) has offered direct criticism of a specific political system. He has characterized negatively that system. I think he wants to influence my politics...” (because we all know that limbaugh and sarah palin never, ever put religion into politics or politics into religion).

So yeah... because he's frustrating people who aren't used to being frustrated from this direction and have zero experience with criticizing The White Man's Religion, I'm kinda digging the Papacy right now more than usual.

He can't fix all the church's problems in one fell swoop. It looks like
he knows there's a lot that needs fixing but he has a lot of hard liners
in his organization that he has to work with and work around.

Though it's relative to others who have held his position, and leaders of other branches of Christianity.

I'm an atheist and was raised a lutheran. But I'm old enough to remember those days when the catholic church opened itself to ecumene, it was John XXIII, I think. I was a child then, but I liked it, as I learned that the differences between people can be overcome. Then came those conservative popes who were so reactionary to reject everyone who did not want to obey without reserve.

Now there is hope. For me, the teachings of the New Testament are a powerful piece of ethics and if Pope Francis could lead his followers to bear this in their minds, I'd really love him for this.

When I heard the name he chose, my first thought was "Franciscus? The poor? Who talked to the animals? Is this a miracle?"

No, I'm still an atheist. But I like him.

significant, that I was raised in a family that didn't take religion as a litmus test for family or friends, and were all secularists. We gave the government its due and thought religion should be completely private and not fighting the government in the public square. Thank goodness they've passed on, they'd be freaked out by the turn the country has taken in the last few decades.

We had agnostics, atheists, baptists, methodists, lutherans, unitarians and those who'd left church altogether. And just the one lone catholic. The rest were skeptical and borderline anti-catholic as it was just 'too much religion' for them.

But those beliefs didn't exclude anyone. So for me to think seriously and have had the interest that has been sparked in myself about this pope and the church, surprises me. I am finding a depth I didn't realize was there.

And yeah, I like this guy and the spirit of love and acceptance he exudes, and I love TPTB being called out about the things my family and I thought were important, living up the Golden Rule in all things.
