Exhibit makes a 'very heartfelt, very heart-wrenching' salute to fallen servicemen

On Sunday afternoon, a row of veterans lined up in the parking lot of VFW Post 2403 in Benson. They aimed their rifles at the sky and shot. Once, twice, three times. The haunting melody of taps followed.

They marched into the building, down a hall and into the South Room. There, surrounded by display boards with photos of deceased soldiers, they retired the colors.

They remembered.

The closing ceremony and three-volley salute signaled the last day of the Remembering Our Fallen exhibit at the VFW post. The exhibit honors servicemen and servicewomen with ties to Nebraska and western Iowa who were killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Remembering Our Fallen opens Tuesday at Disabled American Veterans, 4515 F St. in Omaha.
