Dear Move-On and everyone seeking donations

I'm sure I speak for so many of us unemployed and financially destitute, but every fund raising email I receive only further depresses me.

I believe in your causes BUT.....

Please add a click box which allows us to opt out of the fund raising letters. I stand with the polls and petitions which cost nothing, but asking for what I don't have has me reaching for another Xanax. It is yet another reminder of my financial misfortune.

It is so bad at the end of the year that I am just deleting or unsubscribing to the organizations sending them. This benefits neither of us.

So please understand. I AM BROKE!!! I applied for welfare today and when I open the 15 messages, 13 of them are asking for money.

So I ask you in return: Brother and Sister, can you spare ME a dime?

With all respect and regards. May our New Year be a damn site better than the last.

Asked the question of why I had not been giving and said "is it something we have done"
But there was no where to answer the question, so I think they don't really want to know, if you can't send the money they just don't care why.
Move On just like all these other groups have become a money raising machien...and where that money goes is questionable.

...they come in by the pageful. I donated to a few, and at that not in any huge amounts. I have to save my damn money if I ever fucking hope to retire (HAH!) or get repairs done. People just do not have tons of money to give end of every month, end of every year - especially with so many un or underemployed, and having their UI and SNAP cut - damn.

some groups seem to know people are financially strapped so they ask for "only" $3.00. Then in a few days, they ask for $3.00 again and on and on. Although it seems like a relatively small amount if I gave them $3.00 every time they asked for it in no time I'd have contributed $300 or more. Seems like they're asking for the same amounts just not all at once.

But give once and every related charity gets in line for the next ten years. Then I feel terrible because I have to choose just one.

I don't post here - usually just read entries. But these people must all be 1%ers because they sure don't seem to understand that everyone is tapped out at this time of year. If they got all the donations we have received e-mails for we would have to cough up about 1500 a month. They surely cannot be serious. My hubby and I are sick of it, too.

If they really cared about the cause, and getting the word out, every single email would not just be a little tease fluff followed by a request for money. No hard facts, no in depth article, just OMG THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS, send us money. There are several organizations that do this, and I have unsubscribed to all of them.

I am sorry that you are in dire straits. May the next year be better than this one for you. Have a happy new year.

As I stated, much of what these groups do is beneficial.

Constant fund raising from the poor is (personally) depressing.

Please read the other comments here to see that hitting delete isn't the point.

All I ask is to have an option until I CAN donate.

You must not be poor or broke if you don't get this point. It is simply another reminder that I am now poverty stricken and that these groups do not give a damn!

You don't either it seems. Wave the magic wand and it'll all go away.

Who gains if we unsubscribe to every one of these organizations?

and other gifts I end up feeling obligated. But I am very fortunate right now so I give and I feel good about giving. I totally understand that many many people are not in that situation right now and I hope the ones that have that reality right now don't feel guilty. You can only give so much. Compared with the rich I don't give much at all.

It pisses me off that these multimillionaires give only a tiny portion of what they have. Like what is the big deal about giving 25 million when you have 1,000 millions? I think you should be giving 990 million and keep 10 million for yourself. Who can't live on 10 freaking million dollars?

My wish for everyone is greater prosperity in 2014, (and a democratic congress that will help make that possible)

Usually there is a link so you can unsubscribe.

Several months ago I realized I was getting in the neighborhood of FIFTY appeals PER DAY and decided to unsubscribe to them wholesale. I kept my contact with OFA and the Democratic Party (local and national) but if they continue to annoy I will chuck them as well.

I think the various organizations must be getting some negative feedback because a number of them had boxes to check off asking if I wanted fewer emails rather than none at all. I said I wanted none.

Best of luck.

Sometime this year I'll start over with a few small donations to Democrats -- but over the past few years it seemed like every petition I signed, even though I gave no money that way, spawned automatic appeals for donations.

Happy new year.

the person you think you're donating to?

The Tampa Bay Times recently did a piece about how much the fund raisers rake off the top, usually keeping 95% of funds raised for
"administrative/fund raising" costs.

I'm tapped too.

It would be different if the DGA and everyone else could tell us how they caused the minimum wage to rise, the SNAP program to stay funded, or homelessness to be lowered, but it seems they play against the fears of the "other guy" said this bullshit.

Pretty much all of December right up today. In fact in the last 24 hours I've gotten at least 10. I'm close to removing myself from all political lists.

During the 2008 and 2012 election I gave quite a bit. Right now I just can't afford it. I'm a doctoral student with student loans, a mortgage, a demanding wife, and two cats that piss me off. I'll gladly give them a cat. I haven't had a study job in 2 1/2 years and will finally be starting one in March that pays well. Unfortunately my new job is far enough away I have to rent a small apartment because driving back and forth is a waste of time and gas.

(A side note: I don't hate cats, just the ones I have. One yowls half the night and bites. The other is a stray my wife rescued and does nothing but meow and hiss at me).

And, like the letters, they always push a "suggested" donation of at least $250. Try to tell them "no" and they start to argue with you. Democratic fundraisers are especially bad at this, in my experience.

They're either tone deaf or utterly full of gall, especially when they know full well the financial state of most of their base these days.

(And as for "suggested donation/gift/contribution," what have you...I give what I can, when I can. Stop with this crap, already -- it puts people off, big time.)

In cases like this, Unsubscribe *is* your friend. You know how to get in touch with these folks should you decide to give anything.

35. I think these organizations
Thu Jan 2, 2014, 07:35 AM
Jan 2014

understand their email recipients can't contribute constantly. It's a numbers game. The more emails they send out, the more likely they will hit someone willing and able to contribute. When I can't contribute to a particular email (which is most of the time) at least I am still maintaining that connection and reminder of the existence of an organization I regard as important. If I unsubscribed to their emails (I don't) I might never contribute and forget about them entirely. I don't want to forget about these organizations. I want to contribute, just on my own time. And so that's what I do.
