First Snow, Then 'Brutal' Cold For Millions In Storm's Path

More than 90 million people across the Midwest and Northeast were bracing for a major snowstorm and blizzard-like conditions, followed by dangerous, bone-chilling cold that could sap the melting power of salt and threaten lives.

"It's going to be brutal," Weather Channel coordinating meteorologist Tom Moore said of the expected sub-zero temperatures. "People that are vulnerable are really going to be hurting."

While the immediate focus was on snow — with up to 10 inches possible in New York City, possibly 18 inches burying New England, and more than 1,800 flights canceled — the cold behind the snowstorm could be crippling.

The high temperature in New York City will be in the teens on Friday during the day and drop to between 5 and 8 degrees in the evening, with the wind chill making it feel well below zero.

“Please, starting this evening, stay indoors for the maximum extent possible," newly minted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio implored residents at a Thursday evening briefing.

"If you don’t need to go out, please don’t go out."

Along with several blankets and a comforter, I added an electric throw to the mix for my Christmas present. It puts out good heat....between that and the dogs, I'm good although somehow last night I ended up with just the unheated edge of the throw. Luna had somehow managed to pull it on top of him .

My horse is triple blanketed and I'm giving her so much hay she pulls it apart and sleeps in it. I also carry her hot water down from the kitchen. She loves it hot...sips it like tea until its warm and then drinks it straight down.

ours live inside here in Houston (they love it outside at 40 degrees in the winter - but the summer heat is killer). The local rescues may need some help with feral colonies etc if you're so inclined.

Tonight there's a freeze warning and tomorrow is supposed to stay in the 40's.

I have a condition where my hands go purple and white if they get the slightest but chilly. cool weather is a bitch for someone with Raynaud's.

If I'm cold, I know that most of yall are frozen. Stay warm

Here in east central Minnesota the month of December was absolutely brutal - started out with 2 feet of snow in one afternoon in the first week of December, then a plunge into below zero temps the next day. We've had a couple of fairly big snowfalls since (there were only 3 consecutive days without snow in the whole month) and it's been below zero for about 5 or 6 days a week every damn week ever since. Today marked the 5th day in a row again with temps never getting above zero. I drive into work every morning with temps between -3 to -27. It's not much fun.

I always worry about folks in states where they're not as used to hard winter weather as we are in the northern states. Even I - who used to live in Alaska - wasn't really prepared for as harsh as this winter has been up here so far.

All you east coast DUers, stay warm and stay safe!

DAMN! I'm living in long underwear and sweats. I boil water on the stove just to warm up the place a little. Even my dog - a mutt who's half husky - doesn't want to go outside for more than 5 minutes at a time.

The bright spot is, since I don't have plumbling, I don't have to deal with frozen pipes. :/

Started snowing around 6 p.m. Went outside to clear the back door, just in case. The way the snow is coming down, I believe we will get 1 inch per hour.

here in northern illinois there were 43 days the low temps were 0 or below. very little snow that we called "snirt".snow mixed with dirt that the winds blew off the fields. 78-79 we had 85 inches of snow where i live and the average temp was 14.i degrees. one night the wind chill factor reached 70 below.

during 77 this is what happened to western new york

The side streets were littered with extension cords running to engine heaters. People would fill bread pans with charcoal briquettes, light them... and stick them under they're oil pans.

I'm freakin' They are saying 26 below here Sunday. When the playoff game for the Packers doesn't sell out you know it's fuckin' cold.

Yep, it's Northern Illinois in January. Though we've had some really easy winters in the last 10 years or so (2011 excepted), it's unwise not to expect this to happen at least once per winter. Makes a person appreciate April just that much more.
