One bicyclist killed, one injured in Chapel Hill hit-and-run

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — One bicyclist was killed and another was injured late Thursday after a hit-and-run on U.S. Highway 15/501 in Chapel Hill, state Highway Patrol officials said.

A Pittsboro police officer driving southbound on the highway near the Southern Village at Market Street shopping center discovered the bicyclists and their bikes in the middle of the road at about 11:30 p.m.

According to investigators, Ivin Levander Scurlock, 41, of Carrboro, and Alexandria Nicole Simou, 40, of Chapel Hill, were riding together when they were hit. Scurlock was killed, and Simou was taken to UNC Hospitals. She was in the intensive care unit Friday morning.

That is, a car illegally turned right across the bike lane, despite my right-of-way, obnoxious lime green helmet and jacket, and blinking taillight (it was daytime) and knocked me off my bike. They slowed to a stop a little ways up the road, but then drove off as soon as I scrambled to my feet to get out of the street. Didn't catch their plate, alas...and got to deal with a cracked bone in my left forearm.

Bad language was used...

Now it's bikes and vehicles and pedestrians.

We used to all get along so well.

What happened?

I spend so much time not knowing what's going on it's exciting to think I may know for once.

This thread, I think, may have been the root cause behind these. http://upload.democraticunderground.com/10024267824#post13

It's a personality conflict I take it. Here I thought traffic was the next "it" thing on DU and I was going to get to be on the ground floor of this one. I guess this mean that my dream of being able to log onto DU for my morning traffic updates won't come to fruition now?
