General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsOn Christmas Eve, I asked DU member Starkraven to Marry Me. She said "YES!"
I was surprisingly nervous.
I am 63, and have never asked anyone to Marry Me before.
We have both been members here since the dark days after Bush v Gore in early 2001.
She chooses not to post, but reads DU almost daily.
We met in St Paul, Minnesota in 1999,
and have lived together in a committed relationship since 2000.
Though I refer to Starkraven as "My Wife" on the pages of DU,
we have never been officially "Married".
That will change shortly.
The Time, Place, and Type of the ceremony is her decision,
though it will probably be small and informal,
maybe under the Triple Oaks in our front yard by a local JP.
Do you think we may be Rushing Things?

I was 42 when I got married the first time, still married to the same girl.
We met shortly after I returned from 'Nam but I was too bugs nuts at the time to enter into a forever relationship so we remained friends and then that faithful day happened and its been dang near 24 years now. We both carried a torch for the other all those years. I remember telling my wife way back then when I get married I want it to be to you. Sure 'nuf thats the way it turned out.

Her: "Morning sweety"
You: "Whaddya wanna do today?"
Her: "I don't know, what do you want to do?"
You: "Wanna get married?"

(34,069 posts)Reminds me of the response my wife and I received in 2004, when we had been living together since 1981, had our marriage taken under the care of our (Quaker) meeting in 1994 (which included an 8 year process of discernment).
When Ohio passed a law banning recognition of same sex marriages, we decided it might be to our advantage if we created a legally valid marriage before the effective date of the law in May 2004
So - we planned a legal marriage in Canada on about 3 weeks notice, and asked a local to Canada Quaker meeting to host us on our travels. Their response: "Shouldn't thee perhaps slow down a bit?"
So, by my calculations, you need to wait another decade - and even then it might be too soon.
Congrats!

Love all you've done there in Arkansas, the wonderful photos and hope and inspiration you've given us with your posts these many years and particularly in the challenging times we still find ourselves in these days.
There are quite a few DU'ers who have "connected" and gone on to form lasting partnerships..I think from reading here...over the years. So, this is truly a wonderful thing.. 's
For those of us who've been here for so long...there's a bit of our lives and history here that means something.. and if it turns out to be long term relationships and eventual committed partnerships ...all the better for it!

Now you will feel no storms, for each of you will be shelter to the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there is no loneliness, for each of you is companion to the other, You are two persons, but there is one life before you, and one home. Turn together to look at the road you traveled, to reach this---the hour of your happiness. It stretches behind you into the past. Look to the future that lies ahead. A long and winding, adventure-filled road, whose every turn means discovery, new hopes, new joys, new laughter, and a few shared tears. May happiness be your companion, May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead; And through all the years to come. Go this day to your dwelling place and enter into your days together. May your days be good and long upon the earth. Your adventure has just begun!
