I did a quick calculation on how much electricity it would take to grow six plants. Assuming a 1000w bulb, 16 hrs /day, 30 days per month= about 500 kw-hrs per month. That is an extra $50 per month. Maybe you could use a smaller bulb which would be cheaper.
I assume a lot of people will grow their own which will probably put a strain on the grid.

(19,429 posts)You need high-efficiency, low heat lights tuned to provide the right spectrum for the best production.

(509 posts)But they are pricey-$500 to $1000. Lots of science goes into those lights, pretty interesting.

(10,942 posts)is kick ass efficient in the light it puts out and the coverage of that light. A single person growing for himself or herself need just one small array. Commercial growers need big arrays, but those people also have more capital to work with and most likely set up sophisticated greenhouses that can run up to several hundred thousand dollars in price.

Whether that X amount is produced in a few large warehouse facilities or in many converted garages has less impact on the energy required to grow it-- it's the same general quantity regardless, and therefore requires roughly the same energy input to produce. It's just more broadly distributed. So's the fire hazard, so all you prospective new indoor growers have a care with wiring, ventilation, and fire prevention!

(509 posts)I have no idea where the herb they are smoking comes from. But I bet there will be a lot of new growers now that wouldnt have risked it before.

(7,051 posts)First, if you know what you are doing, six plants is going to yield somewhere around 4-8 ounces. Unless you are a total pothead, and I mean "gone pro" type of pothead, that's a lot of weed. Most would only need to do one grow for a year's worth of recreational consumption. That grow can be started outside in Spring and harvested early Fall.

(509 posts)I don't know how the Colorado climate ranks for that, though.

(10,942 posts)light emission. The wavelength that an array emits is optimized to provide only the part of the solar light spectral that the targeted plant uses to grow and produce fruit. LED lighting is considerably more energy efficient than traditional lighting in terms of energy use.
