I'm a white male liberal. I know ALL ABOUT white privilege. But where do I go from here? Do I commit suicide? Can I somehow revoke my privileges? I can tell you I have NEVER been in consideration for a job opposite anyone of color/minority, and therefore been hired because I was the white guy. White privilege, I get it. It's societal. I'm white, and I know about white privilege, and yet I would not presume to lecture others for discussing white privilege. Moreover, whereas I don't know of any specific instance I was preferred over a black applicant, I would never claim that I have not benefited from white privilege. When you or I go out the door, we don't have to worry about being profiled by street cops. We are much less likely than a person of color to have had a parent in jail for life. It's simply not possible to be white in this society and not benefit from white privilege. In other words, racism is still real and relevant. The issue therefore merits discussion.

No one is telling you to kill yourself or engage in self-flaggelation. If you care, you can do something. You don't have to be black to fight racism, or a woman to fight sexism. If you don't care, or if you do but choose to focus on other issues, that's your choice. Telling others to stop talking about issues they care about, and calling those issues "pissing contests", on the other hand, is offensive.

But the attitude of "some" people who like to "discuss" such issues here are over the top. Daring to disagree in the least gets strong rebukes and challenges to your "liberal-ness". Want to enlighten the population to such issues? Tell it to the people who need it, the conservatives out there. Badgering fellow lefties and going bat shit(not saying you are or have) when they might disagree even mildly isn't getting us anywhere. And its not just white privilege, but the gender wars and other stuff that goes on and on and on.

I agree that attacking other liberals doesn't accomplish anything. Unfortunately, there are people here who either aren't all that enlightened or are non-liberal trolls. I think the threads you're objecting to attempt to argue with such people. I agree, though, that the liberals here would accomplish more if we avoided attacking each other, ignored the trolls, and instead focused on what we can do out there to influence politics.

FWIW, I've been finding that using the "Full ignore" button has been greatly helpful. I resisted it for a long time, but it allows me to focus on comments by the more thoughtful people here. It's amazing, how different some threads look before and after I log on. I'm sure I'm missing some thoughtful comments posted in response to trolls, but that's the price I'm willing to pay for ignoring the trolls.

Since, generally speaking, woo was not used by society to refer to a woman seeking the love of a man but instead just a man seeking it from a woman it is a patriarchal device pushed by misogynistic people in an effort to not be gender neutral in all speech.

It also plays into benevolent sexism since wooing is treating someone of the opposite sex different than those of the same (if a man doesn't try to woo a man than he is suggesting that women are different and that he favors them. When we see someone as different we might do things differently for them, which is benevolent. In other words, if you do something for one sex you don't for the other you are a pig).

Since white males dominated US and European society and this concepts hails from there it is also part of white privilege. White men would 'woo' white women to enslave them via marriage (and, as noted, since they only married women they were sexist).

So "woo" is a bad bad thing that every liberal must stand against. And if you don't agree with my views on this you hate women and all people who are not white males and are probably a troll or something.
