While it just says they are aware of, and are monitoring the weather conditions, and they will let us know when/if there will be any changes to work hours, tomorrow, at least they aren't waiting until tomorrow to start their 'monitoring'. The last time we had a storm even close to being this bad, our CEO made the decision to open as usual, from his vacation condo in Arizona. Yea, that went down REALLY well with the employees.
I just read that this storm is one of the top 10 winter storms to hit Michigan. One might think a responsible HR/Security team would already have enough information to make a decision on keeping the place closed, for the safety of their employees. I'm hoping the state police declare a state of emergency. That takes the decision right out of corporate hands.

(23,720 posts)I think most schools will be closed and people will be asked to stay off the roads so cleanup crews can do their jobs.

(26,260 posts)A friend of mine has a brother in the Michigan State Police - he said the roads are beyond impassable.
It doesn't seem worth opening a huge building for the few people who might risk the roads.

(23,720 posts)It's probable not going to be a lie. It will be amazing if most cars will even start tomorrow. With the temperatures expected to drop, many people who park outside will experience dead batteries.

(26,260 posts)My car is in a garage, but my house is at the lowest point of the subdivision, so I am down hill from every exit. There's no way I'm getting out of here until the streets are plowed.
They just said Flint has gotten 7.5", so far but I call BS. I've cleared close to that depth, at least twice. They must have some weird metric for measuring snow.
I've got close to 28 years at the company I work for, and have probably used just one unplanned personal day. I think it's time for another.

(6,278 posts)I'm having the same experience in Indiana - I've cleared off 6 inches of wet & heavy snow twice yet they're saying 6" total so far with up to 3" to come.
My wife's employer claims they'll be open tomorrow. I don't see how that can happen...

(14,449 posts)Companies can save money by being open at least with payroll. Employees who don't show up are credited as vacation or sick time where they won't take a day later. Not saying it is right, but that is what they do. Federal Government does the same thing at times. For example, I work at the Naval Academy and on Friday we had a 4 hour delay. Those who decided not to come in were charged 8 hours even though the rest just worked 4 hours. I did go to work although for a split second, I did think about calling out. Glad I didn't now. 8 hours of vacation or sick time would be gone forever. lol.

(154,021 posts)it is simple, they will have to close. You cannot (well should is the more appropriate, but in a true emergency you would be liable to arrest) drive unless you are an emergency worker, or vital hospital employee. Notice, I did not say all hospital employees either.
Yes, that means everything else shuts down.

(26,260 posts)With just 2 road crews for the entire county/entire night, I don't see how they would justify NOT declaring an emergency

(154,021 posts)i truly wonder if it has. Conditions are brutal, so even those folks will have issues. How is your local media working given these conditions? I will be honest, I would hate to be stuck covering your county right now, or anywhere down that dome. (Give me a fire any day)

(26,260 posts)They reported 7.4 inches. The airport shows 13.6. Other than that, their coverage of the road conditions has been adequate, although they failed to report that the road commission had recalled all but 2 crews. Seems to me that is a pretty vital piece of news. They were VERY focused on the low visibility issue.

(6,598 posts)Now, that's shocking. What are the odds our Governor Snyder will declare a statewide emergency? Not good, I think. Hell, even Lansing schools have already announced they're closed. It's really, really bad outside.

(26,260 posts)Local businesses lost thousands because some of them were like me - 6 days without power. But those were local business and just plain citizens, not big corporations, so why would he pay any attention, or even care. I hope this all comes back to haunt him, come election time.

(6,598 posts)Got our power back and came down sick the same day. Still can't shake it. I hope neither of us loses power this time - I couldn't take it. Did you hear how the Lansing Board of Water & Light GM declared the outage catastrophic on day one, then promptly flew off to New York on vacation? He's shocked that people want him fired, since there are STILL people in Lansing who haven't had their power turned back on!!! He makes more than Snyder, too. UGH! Good luck, and stay warn and safe!

(26,260 posts)I have been running a low grade temp, all week, so I might have caught cold from the frigid temps, and way too much physical exertion and way too little sleep and food.
As long as I have power, I can get through just about anything. Another outage would be too much to shoulder.

They do have a reverse 911 as well, so if they activate it.
