Had three sheriffs there this afternoon, banging on the door as I was leaving to pick up my daughter. Decided it would be best to stay away for a while so we went to the store and bopped around. Got home to see a sheriff parked out on the main drag watching my street...
At about 4:30, up rolls four sheriff vehicles, blocking off my driveway, the one across the street, one blocking the way from the house to the meadow and another in front of the suspect's house... two are wearing vests and one had a fucking RIFLE...
I sent my kids to the back of the house to avoid gunfire, as they continue to bang on the door and eventually bust it down. (I am watching from the kitchen, listening thru the window and hiding behind the cupboards.)
No gunfire, but they were in the house for a good 30 mins, taking pics...two more officers rolled up, one plainclothes sheriff with a vest on, and a city cop... then they put the door back together and left.
I walked out and asked if they needed anything, they said to call them when he got home. I actually think the guy just rolled up...just called 911...shit....we'll see if anything happens...
it's a weird world. I thought the guy was just a stupid stoner/skater...can't be dealing, there's never any people at the house wonder what they are after him for?

(8,514 posts)I don't like cops. Let them do their own job. Not taking sides in the war on drugs.

(111,255 posts)If I'd smelled chemical smells on the breeze from that direction and suspected he was cooking meth or worse, you bet I'd have made the call.
Since these guys were loose about the whole thing after they photographed the inside of the house, they likely didn't find meth cooking gear or lots of weapons. He's probably got a grow lite operation in his basement.

(209 posts)I have had grow houses near me before, and the smell is not easy to mask. Nope, it's something else. I am thinking since he was from another state, it's something that followed him...
...and he hits his dog too, so you bet I hope he gets nailed!

(111,255 posts)I wonder what will happen to the poor dog.

(209 posts)BUT this guy lives on my street and my kids have even talked to him, borrowing wood for their kid-fort......I don't need this kind of riff-raff in my neighborhood. Not to mention, as a domestic violence survivor, I think a lot of cops do good work and really *do* intend to protect us. I want my kids to feel the same.
It's the assholes who fuck up protestors or who get off on powertripping at traffic stops who give them a bad name, IMO

(34,381 posts)I'm the daughter of a man who was a cop for 30 years. He was the most ethical, fair, compassionate man I ever met. That's a mighty wide brush with which you're painting them.

(22,457 posts)I don't know your dad but I never met a cop who did not abuse their power at some time. Harass someone just to harass them. Rough up a suspect. Etc. Maybe he was one of the miracle ones who didn't.
Cops are paid to protect. Not be assholes.

(12,448 posts)about it. So tell us, how many of the bad cops did your father testify against in court?
catbyte
(34,381 posts)our own hands, shall we? YEE HAWWWWWWW! And I don't have to justify the actions of my father to the likes of you, who was a better human being than you or I could ever hope to be.

(12,448 posts)I fear them far less than the cops, and this is a great improvement over LA. Like I said, every time I've had need of the police in almost 50 years they only made things worse, never resolved any issues, cost me a lot of extra money because of their involvement, and were consistently assholes about it every step of the way.
So, your sainted father cop never in 30 years saw any corruption in the department, well thats really cool, but not that many of us can live in Mayberry.

(7,720 posts)I have a cousin who is a chief of police. Another cousin is a chief deputy. Most of their calls were situations where they were there to help people, such as medical calls. One of my brothers was hassled by a chief because he did not write up enough traffic citations. Not all cops in all jurisdictions are assholes.

(37,748 posts)The ones you know may in fact be. The ones I know are not; though I have encountered the macho type often before-- mostly in El Paso and Galveston rather than Fort Worth and Dallas
However, I realize we all of us have our biases.

(214 posts)We were heading back to the office and we passed by the cops. They started following us and when we go to my car I got out and they told me to stay in the car.
At this point I was thinking, "Shit, what happened, did we run a red light?"
Turns out my co-worker had Mary Jane in his trunk. I got frisked, emptied my pockets. Luckily they let both of us go, but I haven't seen my friend since.
I hope they legalize pot here in CA soon. I don't do it but it will sure help our prisons.

(585 posts)It was really scary. I had a dog who needed to pee, too. I did what you did -- just hid out at the back of the house until it was over.

(209 posts)told them the car is still there but I am afraid to go outside and my kids are uncomfortable too...she asked me if I wanted the sheriff to call me, I said "no, I just want the calvary to come and handle it!"

(209 posts)my kids are fucking freaked out, my youngest keeps telling me to call them again, cuz he's scared...
...this isn't fair to get us all riled up and freaked out just for something stupid. And I fail to believe that they would need THAT many cops in gear to just pick up a guy on a warrant... must be something worse. But we'll probably never know...

(16,199 posts)They do so many drug raids to justify their existence. Overkill on a drug raid has become the norm.

(7,720 posts)I don't know if it will help, but you could tell your children that the guy has nothing to do with you or uour family and that the police will take care of it.

(14,856 posts)It doesn't necessarily mean your neighbor is a Really Bad Guy. Vests and rifles and whatever other goodies the cops have lying around, they'll bring them out on the slightest excuse.

(68,918 posts)DEA agents and cops shot out the lock and dragged the (mid-60s) couple (dressed in pajamas) at gunpoint out onto their well-manicured lawn.
Turns out they had a few marijuana plants. It was overkill and they lost their home. He went to jail.

(9,289 posts)They showed the boy a video of some drug-dealing gang members and said, "That's you right?" And he said, "No" and pointed out that the kid in the video had a big tattoo that was strangely missing from him. The cops just had the wrong kid. My neighbor's boy is not in a gang and doesn't sell. Weird to think they needed an army to arrest one kid, but I guess it is a war on drugs.

(9,535 posts)For a nut job who was shooting randomly, hundreds of shots, with a high-powered rifle. We were told to stay inside with windows drawn; and stayed on the far side of the house. Very scary. He finally killed hmself, after threatening to kills cops and everyone else.

(3,891 posts)But I find it interesting that you are operating under the assumption that the neighbor is guilty because the police are after him. Despite seeing no evidence of dealing, or other major crimes you are still reacting like many people who believe that the police are there to help. In all honesty, I usually react the other way after seeing the police persecute too many innocents.
My rules are simple. If they want him, let them find him. I don't know shit. When I see the police making an arrest, I don't assume that the guy is guilty and the cops just saved someone. I assume that the guy is at most accused, but usually innocent, and the cops are fucking with him because he flipped them the bird, or he just happened to be near a crime that happened, and thus guilty by their convoluted logic.
Hell, knowing the way that the cops over-react to anything, your neighbor probably hasn't paid his student loans.
Oscarmonster13
(209 posts)Like I said before, I've been protected by the cops in the past and have generally had good reason to trust them. I've had boyfriends who have had trouble with the law and I am glad I was never on that side of the exchange, for sure.
Yes, I admit, these events have shaded my opinion of him...even more so since he has talked with the kids on the street(including mine), and that makes me feel more protective and wary. My daughter is the one who never really liked him, because we'd seen him hit his dog on more than one occasion and wanted to call animal services ...but we never had any way to prove it, didn't know what to say...
But in the end, I guess he's the one that has to worry about the cops, oh well.

(3,428 posts)but no SWAT, just helicopters and and police cars. The helicopters were buzzing the houses. I called the sheriff's dept. to find out what was going on. The dispatcher told me to stay indoors because they were pursuing very dangerous criminals.
After about an hour or so, the helicopters flew away. All that time I thought that the police were pursuing armed murderers, right? Because you wouldn't waste resources like that on routine criminals, right?
Later that night on the the local tv news it was reported that the dangerous criminals had written a bad check. Yup, all that for a bad check.
