The Rude Pundit: Adios, Chris Christie. Don't Let the Toll Gate Hit You On the Way Out

Here's how it probably went down:

When New Jersey Governor Chris Christie heard that Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich wasn't going to endorse him for reelection as governor in 2013, the first thing he did was swallow the piece of calzone that he was chewing as Christie is always testing just how far the stomach band will stretch. Then he got pissed. "That fucker," he probably said to his napkin-holding aides, "should be kissing my pimpled ass endlessly for shitcanning the Trans-Hudson tunnel." That would be the new passenger train tunnel in Secaucus that would have alleviated a great deal of the traffic on the Hudson River crossings, especially the Lincoln Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge, the cost of which Christie totally lied about in order to justify its cancellation. Less traffic means less traffic tickets in places like Fort Lee, where the GWB, as we sometimes call it up here, sits on the Jersey side. Less traffic means less people stopping in the stores of Fort Lee. A new tunnel means less money going to Fort Lee from the Port Authority, which operates the tunnels and bridges, because a pizza pie only slices so many ways.

An endorsement from a strong Democratic mayor would have been the icing on the presidential ambition cake. There was never any doubt Christie would win against Democrat Barbara Buono. And there really wasn't any doubt that he would win in Fort Lee and Bergen County. But girth never lies: Christie wanted more than he needed. "Sokolich owes me. Big time," Christie probably said. "Someone should teach the cocksucker a lesson."

Now that may have been all Christie had to say to send his aides into action. Whatever happened next may have just been implied, a wink to get creative on Sokolich's ass. Or he may very well have said, "Let's block some lanes heading to the GWB on the first day of school and see how he likes that." However it happened, however two of the three local lanes leading to the toll booths on the GWB from Fort Lee got blocked, it was a waste of time, slowed commutes down by hours, and fucked up traffic for days.

And now we know for sure that one of Christie's closest aides, the almost-comically specific named Bridget Anne Kelly, wrote an email to David Wildstein, a crony at the Port Authority, with the almost-comically thuggish command, "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee." Wildstein responded, "Got it." That means a plan was in place to punish Sokolich and the schoolchildren of North Jersey because Wildstein knew exactly what to do.

Notice two things in that exchange. First, they were writing from their personal email accounts. That means they thought they could keep it secret. Second, the date is August 13. School wasn't starting until three weeks later. That means they targeted a time when it would dick over the most people in the most abusive way possible.

Other fun highlights in the documents that Wildstein turned over ahead of an appearance before the legislative committee investigating what can legitimately be called "Bridgegate" include Kelly texting Wildstein while standing in line at a wake, Wildstein mocking a pleading Mayor Sokolich with "Is it wrong that I am smiling?", Sokolich wanting to know what's up because he doesn't want to believe the lane closures are a "punishment" but can come up with no other reason, Wildstein dismissing the kids stuck on school buses with "They are the children of Buono voters" (which was dead wrong), Wildstein threatening to retaliate against the New York Port Authority for opening the lanes on their own, and a worried Wildstein emailing with a former Christie deputy (and current state GOP chair) Bill Stepien where Stepien calls Sokolich an "idiot."

There's some argument going on about how badly this affects Christie's presidential chances. While we'll know more after tomorrow, the Rude Pundit is currently in the "fucked to death" camp. Christie lied when he said that no one in his office was aware of what was going on. The best he's got there is a plea of ignorance, although, you know, it totally fits with Christie the Fat Bully image.

More importantly, Christie is already seen as anything from suspicious to traitorous by the conservative nutzoid wing of the Republican Party. One thing about the Tea Party is that they despise when some centralized authority tries to control them. That goes for the president and the states, but it also goes for governors and towns. When Rand Paul runs his first ad about Christie, it'll include Bridgegate and it'll include this fun little time bomb: Christie's threat to use eminent domain to take beachfront property in order to build dunes on the Jersey Shore. You wanna tell the teabaggers you don't care about their property rights because of environmental issues? Good fuckin' luck with that.

Of course, the other not-so-secret secret up here is that Chris Christie is a shitty governor, not the undulating savior of the GOP. He is a narcissistic blob, all about the aggrandizement of Chris Christie, everyone else be damned. He got reelected in a landslide party because of Sandy and partly because the Democratic Party surrendered the governor's race and all but abandoned Barbara Buono.

Christie is a rage-filled, vengeance-seeking caricature of a politician from a school so old that it's laughable to think that someone so Boss Tweed-esque could still exist. Imagine Hillary Clinton putting out an ad about schoolkids stuck on buses and missing half the first day of school. It's over.

So are we done with this mad hippo? Can we finally shoot him with tranq darts and ship him to his inevitable Fox "news" show?

Nixon 'rose from the dead' more times than Dracula and the mummy put together; the Republican establishment wanted Nixon to begin the dismantling of FDR's New Deal and Johnson's Great Society.

If the GOP establishment, the shadowy billionaires who control the party, want Christie as their candidate in 2016, they'll spend millions rehabilitating his image.

Nope. Democrats are calling for criminal charges, and the two closest to the event have hired criminal defense attorneys.

It's all over NJ media and the wire services.

Arpaio's under federal judicial supervision, and the county has paid $20M in fines. In addition, courts have ordered Arpaio to make a ton of changes in how his officers do their jobs.

Other than that, everything you said is perfectly true.

Saw this afterwards, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. Some random port authority guy and Christie aid getting in trouble for this means little to me. If anything it makes me more upset with the situation as when done right those at the top can order fairly grievous crimes but pass off blame to their subordinates when @#$@# hits the fan.

It's all over NJ media and the wire services.

It did pick up fast, CNN top story and even Fox News front page. +1 for logic and reason

I mean, Joe Arpaio has committed heinous violations as Sheriff of Maricopa County and to this date has gotten in 0 trouble

I stand by this quote, being forced to be under supervision and changing up how he goes about his business is a corrective action to fix the problems but in no way has he been punished. Making the county pay $20M in fines is hardly a punishment to him, especially considering how many millions he wasted in destroying political opponents through trumped up charges.

and the family of the 91 year old woman who laid unconscious waiting for a delayed ambulance and later died is considering filing civil suit against Christie and all the aides involved.

Also, the emails that have been publicly released are just a tiny part of the 22,000 or so pages of documents that were subpoenaed. This is likely just the tip of the iceberg.

It is always helpful to understand the deeper-down motivations that make somebody acts the way they do - they're manifesting to the outside what's going on inside. And when they manifest in such a way that it harms others around them, then something has to be done to put that in check. To me he's proving beyond a doubt that he is unfit to hold high office. What kind of petty vendettas would we see traced back to the White House if he got in there and decided it was time to show his enemies who's boss? This is NOT the first time he's targeted someone for political payback, after all.

Ironic, too, what you observe - this is a VERY large individual, physically-speaking. He takes up a LOT of space, physically. It's like when you go to a meeting and you lean into the conference table where you're sitting and spread your arms on it so your hands on the tabletop are maybe three-or-so feet apart, so you take up more space - it's a visually-oriented dominating tactic. A mind game to make you seem bigger than everybody else in the room. He gets to use his entire body to take up that disproportionally enlarged space. And I suspect it might make him feel an inner sense of power and control that he's such a formidable physical character. I once had a meeting with one of the associate pastors at the local Presbyterian church. He was in charge of the kids and family ministry. And he confessed to me that he had to proceed VERY judiciously and thoughtfully in his job because he was fully aware that his size made a difference with people around him and could - and DID - intimidate. However inadvertently. And personality-wise, this guy was a total teddy bear. But he was rather large and round, physically. Tried always to present himself as big and huggable. Totally lovely and sweet-tempered man whom I NEVER saw get ruffled or pissed off at anyone. And you know what? I was always relieved and grateful about that. I would hate to have seen a guy like him erupt at someone! It would have been genuinely frightening!

GREAT analysis, abakan! Seems to me to be absolutely spot-on. He's a teeny little weenie, insecure as all hell deep down inside, and overcompensating like crazy with his bluff and bluster and huge size. A man of excesses. Indeed.

It is hard to believe that Christie was not aware that this was done by his staff and it is difficult to imagine, though not impossible, that his staff undertook this on their own.

What is striking to me is how completely unnecessary it was. Like Nixon, in 1972, Christie did not face a credible challenge to his reelection. Buono was at best a sacrificial lamb. No Democrat wanted to run against Christie. Why they felt it necessary to punish a Democratic mayor for not endorsing Christie is mind boggling.

It also puts Christie in the worst possible light as the closure was nothing more than a vindictive, 'we'll show you' retribution.

Doesn't look good for Christie's future plans.

Hey Chris,

How’s it going?

Well, that was probably the wrong way to start. You ain’t having a star spangled day, right?

I just read this at CNN.

E-mails emerged on Wednesday purportedly from top aides to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie bolstering suggestions that George Washington Bridge lane closures last year that tied up traffic stemmed from a political vendetta and not bureaucratic incompetence as his administration claimed.

I know you want to be president one day and people generally don’t mind political vendettas. In fact, most folks kinda enjoy them.

Except, of damn course, when it means they have to pay for it by sitting in damn traffic which you damn caused. That’s when they say, “Well, Damn Chris Christie. He ain’t sitting his bohunkus in this traffic.”

And, you know about that whole The Buck Stops Here thing? Dude, you missed the bus. You’re so out there that you won’t get the Today Show until tomorrow.

Christie said in a statement that “what I’ve seen today is unacceptable,” adding that he was “misled by a member of his staff” and knew nothing about what had transpired.

Now how long did that take you?

Sweetie, I could have told you two months ago before all this started that you cannot trust Republicans. Most of them lie so much that they have to hire someone to call the dogs. Hell, they’ll lie when the truth makes a better story. Sometimes they lie just to stay in practice.

A source close to Christie said “there will probably be some sacrificial firing and that’ll be it.”

Come clean or go home, Darlin’. People won’t mind if you mess around on your wife, if you start a war just for the helluva it, or scream You Lie at the State of the Union Address. You’ll still be reelected. But, traffic. Well, that’s a whole ‘nother ball of wax.

And, by the way, when are public officials going to learn that emails from the office belong to the public? Seriously, didn’t you learn anything from Jack Abramoff?

Love and Fried Okra,
Juanita Jean Herownself

such as Veep or House of Lies.

The Governor will now hire a Crisis Management consultant who will hilariously and profanely chart Christie's course through the minefield. Look for Christie to lead the call for criminal charges against the guilty emailer, Bridget. This plot line will take several episodes to play out, and I can see a bittersweet yet hilarious scene where he explains to Bridget why she has to take the pipe -- "but don't worry, honey, I'll pardon you once I'm president."

Seriously, I hope I am wrong, but I think all this Bye Bye Chris stuff is very premature. The Nixon analogy is very apt, and Christie is a far more talented TV performer than Tricky Dick ever was. Instead of a single Checkers Speech, he will launch a long counter offensive, including appearances on shows like The View and Ellen DeGeneres. He'll probably attend the funeral of the elderly lady and weepily tell the cameras how ashamed of Bridget he is, and vow that Justice Will Be Done.

Never underestimate the gullibility of the TV audience. Once upon a time, Mike Tyson raped a woman and then bit a guy's ear off in front of a global audience. Yet he is still a Celebrity.
