Nelson renews call for federal investigation into Florida unemployment claims mess
Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, is again asking federal officials to investigate the state's new $63 million unemployment claims system, saying ongoing problems with the process may violate the federal Social Security Act.
Nelson, in a letter Tuesday to U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, said the act and other regulations require states to "timely pay unemployment compensation when due." If they fail, he says, federal officials should determine what they can do to correct the problem.
Nelson asked Perez to respond by January 14.
Since the state launched a new online claims system in mid-October, thousands of Floridians have struggled to receive their unemployment benefit payments. The new system -- called CONNECT -- has been plagued by technical problems that, so far, the state and its contractor have not been unable to correct.
