(60,014 posts)my only conservative quality is that I like dogs more than cats (but even that is changing for us...I'd call it a draw, since we have superb specimens of each in our house!)

(585 posts)According to the results, I should be a conservative. In reality, I'm a far-left liberal. I think the writers of the test are trying too hard to link personality traits and *personal* values to political values.

(8,698 posts)I didn't like the way it put some of the results...it was asking you if "somewhat agree" with this or that but the final result was far more projected as being black and white...either/or...it said I was 33/66 liberal-leaning but I dont like that makes black or white statements like "I like dogs and not cats" or that "I am not proud of my country's past" when that is NOT what said. BS study....

How is preferring dogs over cats a conservative quality?

(50,566 posts)Men who love cats are the coolest -- they seem to be more intelligent, creative, and secure in their own masculinity. Also, Republicans/conservatives tend to like to have animals they can order around -- cats ain't havin' none of that! Of course there are exceptions, with plenty of liberal dog people, etc., but on average I think the cat haters are disproportionately male and rightwing and have a need to control other living beings -- like women. Cats do not cooperate with their need for control and obedience.

(3,922 posts)The reason I prefer dogs, however, is that dogs actually want to do something. They like to play, be pet, and demand attention. Cats are the epitome of indifference. They don't do anything but sleep all day and keep you up at night.
Arugula Latte
(50,566 posts)I was just playing with two of them -- throw/chase the mouse. And they are soft and adorable and they purrrrrr instead of annoying barking.
But, you'll never likely be a cat person and I'll never be a dog person. So, Peace.

(17,469 posts)And to broad in their reach. For example action/movies versus documentaries: Well, it depends on the movie. Is the documentary actually a documentary or propaganda? Action movies have gotten tiresome, but there are still some I will see. Actually, I would probably pick a comedy over both.
As to the Met versus Time Square, I would actually prefer to go to the Doctor Who-themed bar or the big comic book store near the Empire State Bldg.
BS test.

Conservative qualities
You think kids should respect authority (What I said is 'Slightly agree', because everyone -should- be able to demonstrate respect. That is not the same as 'always listen to authority')
You're not wild about fusion cuisine (In fact, I've never even heard of it)
You think the government should treat the lives of its citizens as much more valuable than those of other countries (Another 'slightly', because the wording -- 'much more' -- is pernicious)
You don't think your partner shouldn't be looking at porn alone (This doesn't seem like what I answered, the double negative and all. I might have misread this question, or there may be a bug in it. Not sure which.)
You're proud of your country's history (Yet another 'slightly'. We have more good things than bad as a continuum; that's enough to be glad that those things were achieved)
It's a decent idea, but I think it would require a lot more questions to be anywhere near accurate.

(27,441 posts)I answered "slightly" agree or disagree to a couple of them and that really skewed the results.
The cat dog thing is weird. The most right wing conservative person I know just adores cats.

(18,775 posts)I think that may have been more interesting if they had just kept the results simple. Like, you tend to be more on the Liberal or Conservative side of the spectrum. The percentage thing seems like an overreach.
But, it gets them page clicks - and I'm sure that's what really matters

I think there's nothing about cats to recommend them over dogs, regardless of ideology. Except perhaps LolCats.
The other flaw is that there appears to be little distinction between the answers "hell yeah!" and "I dunno... maybe".

Not so sure of their metrics, but I've always thought of myself as a "centrist" more so than a strong liberal/progressive. Mostly, though, I just think that libs/progs have better ideas for making life better for people than conserves do.
I know that they construed some of my "slightly prefers" as YOU PREFER statements.

(16,184 posts)Should be more accurately titled "do you conform more to liberal or conservative stereotypes?"
I like documentaries, but I love well-written and well-directed action/adventure movies as well. Liking one doesn't necessary preclude liking the other.
Times Square vs. MoMA, same thing.
I had five cats and a dog living in my house, but I don't prefer one to another.

I do agree that using a modern browser and not getting excessively worked up over porn are good progressive values, though.
