...and I might get 5 who understand why that isn't true.

And the mocking of the less educated continues, and we still wonder how the GOP messaging beats us consistently.

And even he maintains that it's happening, but it's due to the sun's orbit. Solar Flares. Disruptions.

It sort of works, but not really.

Just people who are ambivalent to the point of disbelieving because there is no simple causal link between global warming (the actual word, not the meaning of the phrase as we know it) and temperatures that seem to be getting colder in winter. They don't understand the science behind it, and its not directly intuitive to those who don't understand the science.

I think, had people realized just how badly the Right would screw over this concept in the days to come, they would have chosen a different phrase for the phenomenon. Climate change is one that gets used a lot, but I'm somewhat partial to 'Climate disruption'. Unfortunately, trying to change the wording now makes people suspicious that you're just 'covering up a hoax'. *sigh*

Unfortunately, it gets carried over to those who also hear those deceptive people and don't have an understanding of how its deceptive. That's all I was referring to.

or global warming as many supporters do. You have to look at long term trends.

Obviously Global Warming is a scarier term than Global Climate Change but it causes unbelievers to ridicule the supporters when we have a cold winter.

I am not entirely convinced that climate change is largely due to human activity at this point but I will agree that the climate is changing and we seem to be in a warming phase.

However I realize that if pollution is a significant factor in the changing climate we can't wait for 50 to 100 years and merely analyze trends in the data. We need to take proactive steps to reduce pollution now. If we do so, at the worst, we will end up living in a much cleaner environment with quite possibly much cheaper sources of energy.

The logic of saying record colds are evidence against global warming is correct, given that when we have record highs in the summer, some fool will always say it is evidence of global warming.

At this late date, anyone who still uses the outdated term "global warming" is simply revealing their own ignorance on the topic. The community of scientific researchers that study our planet's climate have been using the far more accurate terms "global climate change," "increasing climate volatility," and "climate chaos" for years now to describe what's really going on with an important part of the Earth's life support system.

I've been using "DancingBear" as my online handle for about a dozen years or so now (whenever it's not already taken). About 8-10 years ago I did post a few things here on DU, and much more often on the MB/forums run by Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann and several other progressive radio shows of the day. I frankly can't recall for sure if someone else got to "DancingBear" before me here at DU back then or not. In any event, it was taken when I tried to log in today and DU did not recognize my email, so I went ahead and used a different version of the name and signed up for a new account. Anyway, thanks again for the welcome.

Edited to correct minor typos.

Did you ever go to Crawford with Cindy Sheehan? If so, I think I may have met you, vague recollection of db being there with another Duer and a brief meeting.

Du has changed over the years, some good, some bad. There are still outspoken ones who make it unpleasant, but finding out how to use the forum to get good out of it and ignore the nastiness is a good thing. There are some really good and really nice people here too.

I was in Arizona when Cindy Sheehan was in Crawford and was not able to make it out there, so it must have been that other Bear you met.

Forums are interesting places. I did a lot of dedicated and rather serious political writing/analysis (and a fair bit of spirited debating) on several online forums in the previous decade, but as the silly season was ending in 2008 I decided to cut way back on my forum participation because I awakened one day to the reality that I had become in essence an uncompensated content provider for websites that were, when it was all said and done, for-profit commercial businesses. I decided that I ought to put a higher value on my creative output and maybe get paid for writing (at least some of the time). Money for scribbling not withstanding, I also decided that I ought to spend more of my free time hiking up mountain trails and walking along beaches instead of dwelling on things that tend to make my blood boil. So these days I generally limit my forum posting to an occasional evening every once in a fair while.

Note - edited for minor typo correction.

last night on CBC (Canadian news) they were interviewing a climatologist who said, "Global warming does not mean there will be dust storms in St. John's [Newfoundland] or typhoons in Saskatoon." LOLOL. He said, we will have weather that is familiar to us and to our area, with just more extreme events, more precipitation, more extremes. Most people with working left and right hemispheres know this. He also said that the Canadian climate has already warmed up by 3-5 degrees...Celcius. Geez.
