A HELL of a Book! A HELL of a Writer!
Ayn Rand's book Atlas Shrugged has inspired the Tea Party, Paul Ryan, Republican economic policy, and The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey.
In it, Rand uses the word hell 99 times, while using the word heaven only 12 times. Rand's prior book, The Fountainhead has a similar ratio, using hell 109 times while using heaven only 13 times.
By contrast, the King James Bible, depending on which version you check, has a hell-heaven ratio as low as 10 hells to 137 heavens.
Thanks to Amazon.com's look inside feature, it's now easy to determine the frequency of occurrence of certain words and draw conclusions about a book's contents.
In fairness to Ayn Rand and her conservative fans, hell wasn't her favorite word. According to biographers, her favorite word was evil. In Atlas Shrugged she used it 128 times!
