It will help me to stay abreast of things back in my home area

And by the way, I had never heard of the Gillett Coon Dinner before. It doesn't sound all that appetizing to me.

It's Southern humor. They probably eat fried chicken and potato salad or chili or maybe a combination of things. There might even be a dish with coon meat that someone has prepared, and people will try it, but I guarantee you that they aren't filling their bellies with coon meat at that dinner. The wild hog dinner, on the other hand, is probably for real. At least some of the meat will probably be wild hog, anyway.

I've never tried wild hog but as a kid we were country and poor and I remember one time my mom saying to one of my older brothers if he killed it and skinned it she would cook it. He brought in a 'coon and I'm here to tell you it didn't taste all that bad but the longer you chewed it the bigger it got. Worse dinner I ever tried to eat.
