They spent a lot of time on the election and the Civil Rights movement. Jesus, the conservatives simply haven't changed in 50 freaking years.

(7,952 posts)Before he passed he had somewhat of a redemption (because of his acceptance of his gay grandson I guess) but OMG. No one on the "Right" said a word about the murder of those 3 civil rights activists-and I believe silence meant acceptance in that case.

I heard my Dad say this many times. And he'd laugh every time. I can't imagine what he'd think about the politicians and groups like the Tea Party. He died in 1967 at age 51. I have wished many times he was still around so I could get his perspective on things.

Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

(14,971 posts)Thanks for posting. I just finished reading Wrapped in the Flag by Clair Connor. Connor's father was a founding member of the John Birch society. I recognized a lot names in the Philips collection from reading the book.

Standin' in line marking time
Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old lady's eyes
Just for fun he says, 'Get a job'
That's just the way it is
Some things'll never change
That's just the way it is
Ha, but don't you believe them
Said, 'Hey little boy you can't go
Where the others go
Cause you don't look like they do'
Said, 'Hey, old man how can you stand
To think that way
Did you really think about it
Before you made the rules?'
He said, 'Son
That's just the way it is
Some things'll never change
That's just the way it is'
Ha, but don't you believe them
Ooo, yeah (instrumental)
Well, they passed a law in '64
To give those who ain't got, a little more
But it only goes so far
'Cause the law don't change another's mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar
But who knows
That's just the way it is
Some things'll never change (right)
That's just the way it is
That's just they way it is, it is, when you're waiting.
I just realized it was recorded during the Reagan years. Now we know why he was thinking of the subject twenty years later, huh?

(18,318 posts)Not mentioned: SDS endorsed LBJ. Then came 'Nam.
40,000 demonstrated at the GOPer Convention in '64. Who would dream of 1/4 that # now? I recorded on a D-cell reel-to-reel the speech of Nelson Rockefeller who was roundly booed. My Dad was asked to chair the Rockefeller camp. in Fla, but declined as he voted LBJ.
SUCH a time. Our family visited Daytona Beach, Sarasota Beach, and Vero; went to the Daytona 500, Dad got me a subscription to Progressive and Fact mags, watched a raft of good ol' boys fall in love with Diana Ross. And LSD was legal for another year.

(29,655 posts)For an hour format (I think it was only an hour) it was a pretty decent synopsis of our history in 1964. It began on the premise that the year really began on November 22, 1963. I think you can see it on line. (?)

(24,926 posts)It was a good show. You're so right about conservatives. Chilling was Goldwater's comment (paraphrase) "Extremism in protecting liberty isn't a vice."
