These images by Chilean photographer Francisco Negroni of the Cordón Caulle volcano erupting are so jaw-dropping and mind-blowing that were finding it hard to come up with appropriate adjectives. Billowing clouds of ash are joined by spiderwebs of Volcanic lightning to create a light show that truly drives home Mother Natures terrifying splendor.
This particular volcanic eruption began in June 2011, and Negroni was there with his trusty Nikon D300 to capture the action. Rather than continue to describe something that is much more enjoyable to browse through, well get out of the way and let you feast your eyes on this natural wonder:

(75,480 posts)Just the Biblical references alone tell you something, fire and brimstone destroying Sodom and Gomorrah, the pillar of fire leading the Israelites out of Egypt, the burning bush on Mt. Sinai. In the Bronze Age there was the destruction of the Island of Thera in the mediterranean with a super volcano erupting. The tidal waves and other destruction reached to Crete, Egypt and the Levant. I can imagine what went through the minds of the ancients when this happened.

(7,947 posts)The same way it's easy to imagine why early humans conjured gods out of that display, it's not a coincidence that some people think the Earth is 6,000 years old. That's about when civilization and organized religion got started, give or take a year here and there.
Then there's the church and the state, two fairly similar forms of organization. Every organized effort competes against other organized efforts for market share. What organization wouldn't want to create the world in its image? Where the state has basically replaced the church, you'll find less belief in the church. Where it hasn't, you'll probably find more.
And, cool pictures.

(518 posts)there is nothing man can build that nature cannot destroy. The look on his face was so funny. He honestly did not believe me. I dropped the subject. If a kid wants to believe in Santa, who am I to burst his bubble.
