Numbers show depth of homelessness in America

The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently submitted the Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress.

According to the report “(on) a single night in January 2013, there were 610,042 people experiencing homelessness in the United States, including 394,698 people who were homeless in sheltered locations and 215,344 people who were living in unsheltered locations.”

The Point in Time count takes place on the fourth Thursday of every January.

Nearly one fourth of the national homeless population is children and youth. Half of them are unsheltered. Families account for 36 percent of the homeless population.
