“There are a lot of rumors going around,” said Carolyn Buscarino, a family friend for 10 years. “It’s like he vanished.”

Long Hill Township Police Chief Michael Mazzeo, who is leading the investigation, said he hasn’t heard anything about a credit-card purchase. “The most disturbing thing with this whole story is we don’t have anything,” Mazzeo said. “We have nothing.”

The FBI has joined the hunt, assisting local police in a support role.

Bird has worked for Dow Jones for more than 20 years. He did a stint in London for Dow Jones in the 1980s and also has worked for The Associated Press and the Trenton Times, his wife said.
