I got one today and am wondering if it's just another scam.

To "activate" the free credit protection program you need to input your SSN. Over the web.
Red flag to me.
Some years ago a company my spouse worked for had some data stolen. Also got free Experian but the application was hard copy and snail mail.

(7,720 posts)that stole the credit information will utilize it is through 'phishing' expeditions such as the e-mail you recieved delete it.
