Floods in Britain? You'll Never Guess What's to Blame
A British lawmaker has penned a homophobic rant in his local newspaper that blames marriage equality for flooding.

Guess why the weather has been so bad in the United Kingdom?

"The scriptures make it abundantly clear," says British lawmaker David Silvester in a letter to the local newspaper, "that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war."

Prime Minister David Cameron led passage of marriage equality there last year, and The Guardian notes that Silvester quit the Tory party over it. Now Silvester writes in the Henley Standard that, "It is his fault that large swaths of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods."

The letter goes on, and on, against Cameron and his support for same-sex marriage. At one point, he says Cameron only "sheds crocodile tears on behalf of destitute flooded homeowners.".... MORE at

Silvester, by the way, is not a national lawmaker (MP); he is a local councillor in Henley on Thames, which is quite bad enough.

... we're not the only folks having to deal with these crazoids. Of course, on this side of the pond we also get hurricanes, which we gay folks deploy whenever we're displeased.

Our teabaggers should serve as an object lesson. I wonder what folks abroad make of them.

Really, those who don't follow US politics particularly closely (which is most Brits) see them as a mixture of racists and sore losers, throwing a giant hissy fit because they're not running things anymore.

Although in some parts of the country they still wield way too much power -- and they never give up. Right now they want to front a challenger to John Boehner, the Speaker of the House, because they don't think he's conservative enough! That's how bad it is.

Traditionally there has been pretty much no US-style "religious right" in the UK. It is interesting to see an exception to this.

Mostly from NI and Scotland but tune in to BBC news fairly regularly. They have their share of nutters too, it's just that we're so busy fending off our own they don't get much press over here.

Ukip suspends gay rant councillor
19 January 2014

The UK Independence Party has suspended a councillor who claimed recent floods were the result of the Government's decision to legalise gay marriage.

David Silvester claimed the country had been "beset by storms" since the passage of the new law on gay marriage because David Cameron had acted "arrogantly against the Gospel".

He was suspended by the party after defying a request not to do further interviews on his beliefs following his initial claims made in a letter to a local newspaper.

The move came as leader Nigel Farage launched a clearout of "extremist, nasty or barmy" views from the party ahead of polls in May....

Hate the UK?

Marriage equality has been a part of life here in Massachusetts for nearly a decade now but we haven't been overrun by locusts, poisonous frogs, floods, nail fungus, flying monkeys, or ukulele playing Tiny Tim poltergeists

And as far as I can from my little town in the western part of the state, the eastern half hasn't broken off and fallen into the ocean
