Given what has come before it in the film Romney's defeatism in the debates the scene leaves the impression that perhaps in his heart of hearts Romney never really believed he could win. That also seems the message of one of the last scenes of "Mitt," the day after the election, when Romney addressed staff at his Boston campaign headquarters. The old lack of confidence came out again as Romney suggested he never felt comfortable in the race. He passed on something someone at headquarters had told him: "In some ways, we kind of had to steal the Republican nomination. Our party is Southern, evangelical and populist. And you're Northern, and you're Mormon, and you're rich. And these do not match well with our party."

(16,113 posts)that the nomination goes to the person who lines up the most money early, and can prevent their donors from jumping ship early. Romney wasn't the best candidate to campaign on the traditional platform, but he had the most money by far and repukes felt that was the single most important thing in winning a national election.
He didn't really steal the primary, he bought it.

(5,946 posts)It could never be because people don't like or trust you, could it? Or how about your stands were foolish. Never Romney's fault, Oh no.

(505 posts)None of them were electable. Romney didn't expect to win. He never released his financials. He had not planned to win. The powers that be were getting what they REALLY want from prez - no need to change.

(8,361 posts)It is so irritating when people on DU post divisive shit like that.
Put it this way....even with large corps refusing to invest mountains of cash into the economy, even with GOP blocking every jobs bill, even with less than desirable job approval numbers, most knew Obama was a tough candidate to beat.
Even centrist Romney couldn't build a coalition to win and was trounced. No way conservative stars had a chance so they sat out 2012.
It's that simple.
