Especially if you work retail, in a hospital, in a restaurant, or any one of the many, many jobs out there that are not 8am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, with weekends and lots of holidays off.

Added on edit: And a lot of us who will be working will not get premium pay for the day, either.

I might start a personal tradition of some sort to commemorate the day. Since it's always been working retail for me, I never had the time or energy to do anything beyond taking a nap. It's a little weird with my schedule just happening to work out with the day off this year... now I don't know what I should do. Tired of shopping being the default holiday tradition for so many Americans.

and then, because I have to labor for my own business, I go about my day.

Happy Birthday - Stevie Wonder

Lyrics

You know it doesn't make much sense
There ought to be a law against
Anyone who takes offense
At a day in your celebration
cause we all know in our minds
That there ought to be a time
That we can set aside
To show just how much we love you
And i'm sure you would agree
It couldn't fit more perfectly
Than to have a world party on the day you came to be

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

I just never understood
How a man who died for good
Could not have a day that would
Be set aside for his recognition
Because it should never be
Just because some cannot see
The dream as clear as he
That they should make it become an illusion
And we all know everything
That he stood for time will bring
For in peace our hearts will sing
Thanks to martin luther king

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Why has there never been a holiday
Where peace is celebrated
All throughout the world

The time is overdue
For people like me and you
Who know the way to truth
Is love and unity to all god's children
It should never be a great event
And the whole day should be spent
In full remembrance
Of those who lived and died for the oneness of all people
So let us all begin
We know that love can win
Let it out don't hold it in
Sing it loud as you can

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday

Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday

Ooh yeah
Happy birthday...
We know the key to unify all people
Is in the dream that you had so long ago
That lives in all of the hearts of people
That believe in unity
We'll make the dream become a reality
I know we will
Because our hearts tell us so

We talk about him throughout the year, but I make it a point to talk on his birthday as well as MLK day. I also show him some clips of his speeches.

I like the idea of a day of service and hope to implement that in some way.

The problem with working retail is every Holliday becomes a day to dread, so when I happen to get one off I just want to be left alone, lol. I'll probably just go to breakfast with a friend and do some reading.

We actually did it a day early this year, we were out for a walk-and-talk. I was a wee lad in NYC when Dr. king was killed, I have some recollection of the times. Last year we watched a documentary on how Boston avoided rioting after Dr. King's murder by letting a James Brown concert proceed.

We've been doing it since he was 6 or so. It's interesting how, year-by-year, his understanding becomes broader and more nuanced. They start as tiny newborns, and end up as adults. The process is amazing.

I do this first or last thing to anyone I happen to talk to.

I also say Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Valentines Day, Happy Mother's/Father's day and etc. on their respective days.

It's about good will toward all and the smile is always important.

Maybe I might just start doing that online too... could start a trend around here. I never thought about it before just now. Thank you for asking, 1StrongBlackMan. Happy MLKjr. day to you.

about Martin Luther King, Jr. for the first time. Mind you. Three.

Her son listened intently and quietly and at the end of the discussion, he announced that he wanted to invite Martin Luther King, Jr. over to play with his toys. End of discussion.

It's a good start, I guess. And apparently, my grandson has good judgment in picking his playmates.

Don't we all wish sometimes that we could invite Martin Luther King, Jr. maybe not to play with our toys but to counsel us with his wisdom.

It's like it doesn't even happen up around here.

That ain't right.

I remember people at work asking if we would ever get the holiday off so we could particpate in day of service events and they said "that's what you get vacation days for."

I am now feeling guilty that I didn't plan to take the day off to observe.

Fuck.

I feel awful now.

She apparently thinks "Grandpa" means an older gentleman with facial hair.

So, at the grocery store, she looked up at the mustachioed black man running the cash register and cried, "Grandpa!"

He looked down at her and said, "I don't think I look very much like your grandpa. But that's cool!"

It's also Vivekananda's birthday this month, plus it's about to be Republic day; it all kind of gets mashed together. It starts in an hour; if it's cool I'll report back. (I suspect from the program it's going to be bored high school kids reading out speeches.)

that way. We need to start some sort of tradition. One year, I started his biography and read it over the next couple of weeks. Normally I suppose I just pay attention to what's on the net about him. Maybe will go and find his speeches on you tube if there and listen to them.
