A La Vista man has been charged with first-degree murder in a more than 10-year-old homicide case in Council Bluffs.

Thomas J. Sanchez, 47, was charged in the killing of Nelson Alvarez-Hernandez, 32, of Omaha on July 31, 2003.

Alvarez-Hernandez was stabbed to death in an altercation outside 1613 S. 13th St. in Council Bluffs.

Sgt. Dave Dawson of the Council Bluffs Police Department said Friday that investigators tied Sanchez to the case through DNA evidence.
