It’s not rare to see activity bubbling on Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, but it is a rare treat to see it as spectacularly and vividly captured on camera as it is in this newly released video from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The video captures the large, round bubbles of lava spattering on the surface of a lava lake at the summit of Kilauea, one of the world’s most famous volcanoes to have such a lake, created by an accumulation of liquid lava.

The spattering is caused by large bubbles bursting at the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The lava lake is currently around 160 feet below the rim of the crater and rising.
