Muskrat love: Annual dinner in Lower Alloways Creek ties family, friends, food together

LOWER ALLOWAYS CREEK TWP. — People didn’t just come for the muskrat.

Old friends, family, locals and many from out of state came for the food, but also the friendship Saturday at the 76th Annual Muskrat Dinner hosted by the Lower Alloways Creek Township Fire Company.

This year’s dinner had a huge response and was sold out – with about 250 in attendance.

Tim Burns, coordinator for the event, said he was surprised how quick they sold out of tickets.

Spread out on the tables accompanying the fried muskrat – biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans and the dinner’s notorious peppered cabbage. Not to mention dozens of delicious cakes for desert.

The annual muskrat dinner is the biggest fundraiser for both the fire company and its Ladies Auxiliary. The event, which has brought in around $5,000 in past years, is split between the two organizations. The Ladies Auxiliary has been involved in the dinner since its start.
