Rick Santorum calls Puerto Rico ‘a Spanish-speaking country

Rick Santorum delivered yet another gaffe about Puerto Rico on Sunday as voters there head to the polls for the Republican primary.

The former Pennsylvania senator referred to the United States commonwealth as a “Spanish-speaking country” on ABC’s “This Week.”

Although Santorum was quick to fix his mistake, it was yet another example of how the presidential wanna-be has stumbled in his efforts to gain support among the island’s Republican voters.

Santorum made the error while he was trying to explain his previous comments that Puerto Rico's residents would have to speak English as a condition of being admitted as the U.S.'s 51st state.

Guess he believes this shout-out to his xenophobic supporters is worth alienating voters in Puerto Rico...although it's an insult to Spanish-speaking voters nationwide as well.

You can go all day without hearing one word of English.
I can just see him standing in the middle of the downtown yelling "SPEEEEEEEK EEEEEEEEEENGLEEEESH!"

Do they not speak Spanish? Or is Puerto Rico not a country? I understand the "commonwealth" thing,
but Puerto Rico has enough autonomy to field their own national teams in all international sporting
competitions, for instance. Is it not enough to make them a "country"? Not entirely independent one,
sure, but still.

For example:

The people of Puerto Rico compete under the flag of the island.

The people of Puerto Rico fight under the flag of the United States.

A few famous Puerto Ricans.

He should move to Texas. Then he could join gw and Rick. At least then he would be in intellectual comparable company.
