How to Lie. Lesson #3,657: The literal truth

In the Republican response to the SOTU Glinda the good witch (I thinks that's who that was) said that Obamacare is a disaster (vague value judgment, not really factually addressable).

Then in the place where one would offer *evidence* in a legitimate argument, she offered something that was annecdotal AND indirect.

Some person sent me a letter and SHE said her premiums went up $700 because of Obamcare.

There is no factual claim there of any real-world effect of Obamacare. All the speaker is claiming is that someone else made a claim to her.

Which is probably true.

That the second hand claim is TRUE is implied... for no reason. I guarantee you that the congressperson has also gotten letters from somebody about chemtrails, flying saucers and, given her location, plenty about bigfoot.

You will notice this time and again from Republicans talking about Obamacare—the statement that their constituents claim something as a replacement for statements that something is true.
