Rich CEO Tells 'Daily Show' The 'Mentally Retarded' Are Maaaybe Worth $2 An Hour

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/29/the-daily-show-minimum-wage_n_4688134.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

But what we'd really like you to focus on is the following exchange (at around 4:15) between correspondent Samantha Bee and Peter Schiff, the extremely conservative CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, who FREAKING HATES the minimum wage:

Schiff: "If we eliminated the minimum wage law then individuals would be free to accept jobs at whatever pay they're able to get."

Bee: "Paint me a picture of a person whose work would be worth $2 an hour."

Schiff: "You know somebody who might be? Maybe somebody who is, uh, you know, what's the politically correct word? Uh, you know, uh, for, uh, you know, mentally retarded?"

It should have started with that and expounded on how they want to turn people into a cogs in a corporate machine. Billions of small cogs get paid $2/hr with a few large cogs.

I'd rather do business with someone who thinks and acts like a human than someone who looks at people these corporate thugs do.

As to the "mentally retarded" statement, this guy seems like he could benefit from psychiatric help himself, since he seems to be dedicating his life to the disservice of those around him.

"The study of the psychopath reveals an individual who is incapable of feeling guilt, remorse or empathy for their actions. They are generally cunning, manipulative and know the difference between right and wrong but dismiss it as applying to them.
They are incapable of normal emotions such as love, generally react without considering the consequences of their actions and show extreme egocentric and narcissistic behavior."

I didn't know about this, so I read up on it a bit. It stems from an (archaic) 1938 law.

After weighing both sides of the issue, I'd say everyone should get paid the same for an equivalent job. My reasoning is the same reasoning for living wage in general. A business is not successful if it can't afford to pay its employees well. If a business can't afford to pay its employees well, it is hurting the community, not helping.

Those who support Goodwill's policy say that it gives people the opportunity to be proud of having a place to go and work. That doesn't make sense. I would say that it would make them proud to know they are getting paid what others are getting paid doing the same job.

While attending college I worked in a group home for intellectually disabled adults. They all worked. Those that were higher functioning worked as hotel maids and high school custodians. They worked about 20 hours a week and made minimum wage + the woman at the hotel made tips. This extra money toward going out to movies, eating out with friends and clothing.

Those that worked at Goodwill and a few other non-profits, often brought home a 2 week, 40 hour pay check of $25-30. They had very little for themselves.

that some of the developmentally disabled at goodwill made as little as TWENTY TWO CENTS an hour. the ceo claimed that this was acceptable, based on the rate of work they did. from that moment on, I have not stepped into a goodwill store, nor will I ever donate to them either.

I donate and shop at a St. Vincent DePaul. A few years ago my brother was in the hospital for 7 weeks and had about 12 surgeries. The St. Vincent DePaul Society at his Church during the time he was in the hospital and his return home, made sure there was meals on the table for his family, they gave them gift cards for the grocery store. When he was home someone visited every day, because his wife and kids were all at work.

I had a friend (now deceased) who was an attorney. He had an older couple with an intellectually disabled son, as his clients. They asked his assistance with future plans for their son. He got the son in a program at Goodwill Industries (to me this word denotes "profit". The first paycheck the son brought home was for the net amount of $1. Goodwill charged for "training fees', lunches (the son took his lunch to work every day) and assorted other charges. The couple removed their son from Goodwill.

and that, one way or another, people will get the money they need to survive? Either they'll use welfare programs or they will steal or beg on street corners to get what they need to live. Especially if they have children to support. I know most parents would do almost anything to feed their kids.

People are not just going to curl up and die because the 1%ers don't want to pay others a living wage. In fact, in the past when the wealth gap got to wide, things often got very ugly for the rich.

The 1% should remember that a race to the bottom usually ends with everyone down and out and on the floor.

people start robbing houses and breaking into cars. I know the rich usually live in gated communities, but now-a-days a lot of crime also happens online. You don't even need a gun anymore to clean someone out! Not that I'm endorsing that kind of thing, but like I said up-thread, people aren't just gonna give up and starve. And considering how the 1%ers treat the rest of the world, they're going to run out of places to hide. I don't think that just because they pay others to protect them (especially if they pay them shit wages and force them to fight against their friends and family), that they'll stay safe forever. Eventually, if things don't change, they will end up pissing-off the bottom 99% of us so much that there's no telling what could happen to them. Then it's just history repeating itself.

Plus, if the rest of the world hates them, who's going to do all their work? It's not so fun being rich if you have no friends and you have to cook your own meals and clean your own home. Or homes, since they're so damn greedy....

So while he tells his clients that gold at $1200 an ounce is "cheap," he can't bear the thought of a "retarded" worker making $10 an hour.... even at that wage, that person would be lucky to save enough to be able to buy a single ounce of gold every year.

The irony is lost on him, I'm sure.

except for the supervisor. They do all the work. They are worth much more than $2.00 but probably not to this fool. Because he does not know what he is talking about. In that same workshop are weavers who make rugs on a loom that they sell for $30-40 each. Some of them go out into the community to do janitorial work, yard work, scoop snow for those who cannot and work in cafes. The community sees them as a valued part of the economy.
