Please tell me no one here supports this: Breastfeeding Is Now Required By Law In The U.A.E.

The Emirates' Federal National Council has passed a clause, part of their new Child Rights Law, requiring new moms to breastfeed their babies for two full years, The National reports. Now, men can sue their wives if they don't breastfeed.

According to the National, there was a "marathon debate" over the legislation, but it was ultimately decided that it is every child's right to be breastfed.

Research has found many benefits of breastfeeding for baby, from reducing the risk of obesity to better language and motor development.

I breastfed each of my kids for two years, and I still don't support this.

This is a bodily autonomy issue. Women own their own bodies. They can give freely if they wish, but in no way and at no time should they be forced.

infant milk will be taken off WIC checks and they'll demand mothers to breastfeed. I see the handwriting on the wall

When I had my children, it was my CHOICE to breastfeed them or not. When I had my youngest child I didn't produce any milk . Have the UAE considered that all mothers may not even produce milk?

I nursed my daughter for as long as SHE wanted to which was almost 2 years. Too many in the family were horrified that was too "old". My choice, and my daughter's.

As someone said, the mother could have medical issues. Plus, if the woman does not want to breastfeed, she will not be relaxed enough, and will have problems right there.

My contention is that the American Taliban will stop at nothing to deny women their agency, and keep them tied down to home and family. How many women can realistically expect to remain employed if they have to take regular breast pumping breaks for two goddamn years? Answer: none. They will have to remain at home most or all of the time in order to comply with the law. Uppity Women Problem? Solved! Voilà!

Any mandate is terrible, two years is simply ridiculous.

for 2 days or 2 years is so very wrong.

It's up the the individual mother to decide whether to breast feed or not, and for how long - period. It's none of anybody else's damn business.
