On Monday mornings Morning Joe, co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski hosted New York Times reporter Kate Zernike, who broke the news Friday that David Wildstein had accused Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ), through an attorney, of knowing about the Bridgegate lane closures as they were going on. Along with GOP strategist Nicolle Wallace, they conducted a ten minute debate on whether Christie had ever claimed not to have known about the lane closures as they happened, and even laughed at Zernike and co-host Thomas Roberts as they introduced the facts.
In an earlier segment, the crew had just finished discussing the Wildstein revelations, and a memo that the Christie administration had put out in response, attacking Wildsteins credibility. Brzezinski then brought in Zernike, and asked if Wildsteins accusation was worth immunity.
Big headline is Christie lied during that marathon two-hour press conference, where he insisted over and over he didnt know anything about the lane closings until they were over, Zernike said. That verifiable fact was a hilarious mystery to Scarborough, Brzezinske, and Wallace, who conducted a ten minute debate on whether Chistie had ever actually claimed not to know the lanes were closed while they were closed, even laughing at and mocking Zernike when she patiently explained that Christie had, in fact, claimed not to have known about the closures as they occurred, and shouting down Thomas Roberts when he tried to introduce some basic facts about the story.
-snip-
For ten minutes, Zernike and Thomas Roberts patiently tried to explain that Christie had, indeed, claimed not to have known the lanes were closed until after they had already been reopened, only to be met with chuckling, mockery, and a chair dance from Wallace.

(3,182 posts)We really want this story to stay alive long enough to paint Republicans with that corruption taint.
Let it sit like this for months and months, every Friday a new and intriguing tidbit reminding the American people that Republicans like Christie are corrput.
All the way until election day 2014 if you ask me.
A new dribble every Friday afternoon will work perfectly.

(3,182 posts)Every sentence started by Mika and Joe started with "IF it is proven.......which it hasn't been........"
But, you just had to watch carefully...their hearts just weren't in it. Both of them KNOW Christie is done. At this point, they are both just waiting for the news story that allows them to say "Well, I always said IF, and there it is...."

we didn't have Florida 2000 and the bush v Gore mess because Cheney stopped making
oil companies having to have an emergency kill switches for deep water oil rigs.
Joe worked to make the loser of the 2000 election in Florida declared the winner
and that BP oil leak is a direct result of bush v Gore.

(5,842 posts)at least until the Christie story is resolved.
Joe and Mika though are so wrapped up in their personal friendship with Christie that any story that continues to show Christie in a bad light is met with instant derision and skepticism. I generally like Wallace's presence on the panel but her continued defense of Christie now appears to nothing more than an effort to maintain his viability as a candidate for the GOP in 2016. If a Democratic governor was in the same situation there's no doubt she'd be calling for him/her to resign by this point.
There's nothing inherently wrong with the format of Morning Joe as demonstrated with how well the show works when both Joe and Mika are on vacation. That said, what used to be a pretty varied panel just a few years ago has now been reduced to the same 4 to 5 faces over the past year or so (I guess past regular panel participants got tired of Joe's tantrums and interruptions).

(29,204 posts)where he said, over and over, that he didn't know about the lane closures until after the fact (by a couple of weeks).
"There were news helicopters... everyone knew... of course Christie knew about it, what he was really saying is that he didn't ORDER the lane closures and didn't know that someone on his staff DID order it, how can you be so dense as to not know this, it's obvious that is what he meant!"
Except, of course, Christie was at the news conference for 2 hours, had plenty of time and questions to answer about the lane closure on the bridge, and kept repeating he didn't know about it.
Maybe he did hear about it on the news...
Then why didn't he ask about it on the first day? Why isn't there an email he could release today from his office asking the Port Authority WTF?
You can't have it both ways. If he says he didn't know about, and Wildstein has evidence that he did, then he lied repeatedly at his news conference... if he DID know about it, but didn't order it or know why it was happening, why didn't he ask about it (after all, it was a "big news story with helicopters and stuff" at the time it was happening.
And, more important, who came up with the cover up story about a "traffic study" and why did Christie sign off on that?

(28,552 posts)... of this "where he said, over and over, that he didn't know about the lane closures until after the fact (by a couple of weeks)." just this morning. Christie could not have been more clear, he claimed to not know UNTIL IT WAS OVER.
Why did he spin it that way? Because in addition to trying to dodge responsibility for ordering the closure to begin with, he also cannot defend the idea that he knew they were closed AT ALL.
I believe Wildstein and I hope he cuts a deal.

I figure that has to be the reason why you see some higher-level GOP names starting to come out to defend Christie.
They know that Christie is the only current prospect who is remotely viable among independent/moderate voters so they are going to man the pumps for as long as it takes in order to keep Christie's chances afloat.

(6,440 posts)(Mediaite's fault, not the OP's). The word-order makes it sound like it was the reporters who didn't know the facts of the case. It should have read something like "Morning Joe crew doesn't know facts of Christie story, laughs at reporters who do".

Calling out these repeated frauds, propagandists and operatives is not enough, they need to be prosecuted/held responsible for their behavior or else they'll just keep getting paid to do it.
