(50,566 posts)It was based on a real-life "affair" he had with a high school girl named Stacey Nelkin that he had when he was 42. I can't believe he showed the world the gory details of that travesty in "Manhattan."
The worst part, to me, was the end where she is going to go study acting in London and he's trying to stop her from this amazing adventure. Why? He wants to keep f@#$ing a teen.
He grosses me out.

I haven't seen an Allen movies in a long time, and you post reminded me of his disgusting themes throughout most of them.

I've enjoyed his stuff ever since he did his stand up act in the UK early sixties.

(31,815 posts)My husband threw Midgnight in Paris in the trash yesterday. He didn't want shit touching his 'greatest and greats'. My husband is a juried artist and very eccentric - he deliberately lived in the Monmartre district of France after he came out of the military with two other artists - because that's where the class of 1919 lived. No - it's in the garbage now. Though he's watching Modigliani again as I type this. . .

I can't believe such a statement was even posted. It's disgusting that a 42 year old goes after a child. It's molestation, just like you said, not sex.

I did find his 1970's stuff to be pretty funny, especially "Sleeper", but he lost me after "Annie Hall". Then, of course, finding out he's a perv completely diminished any desire I could have had to see anything he would ever be associated with again.

(3,827 posts)directors.
I've seen most of his films. The ones that didn't impress me usually stand out above the great films. For instance, I thought "Whatever Works" with Larry David was one of the worst films (of his) that I have ever seen. I just didn't buy into David's role in that film. Perhaps if it were cast with a different actor then it might have worked. I dunno.
Overall his good movies outnumber the bad apples. Recently, I watched "Blue Jasmine" and was amazed with Cate Blanchet's performance.
I never much paid attention to the gossip columns from the cess poll publications out there.
Do I think he molested Mia Farrow's adopted daughter? No.
Do I think Mia Farrow is a nutcase? Yes.
Does it matter what my opinion on this issue is? No.
I do believe that when these allegations originally surfaced in the 90s that the police/prosecution had concluded that Mia had planted these thoughts in Dylan's head. If Woody had done these terrible things then he would be sitting in prison right now. That's just my opinion.
Whenever I tell my friends that I admire his work I always get these strange looks. Personally, I don't care what they think. Woody Allen is one of the best writers/directors of Indie movies that Hollywood will ever see. I just don't believe they appreciates his films. He puts one out almost every frickin' year! That in itself is mind-blowing. What's more amazing is the quality of the films. Just look at the films that he has made this century:
2013 Blue Jasmine (written by)
2012 To Rome with Love (written by)
2011 Midnight in Paris (written by)
2010 You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (written by)
2009 Sdelka (Short) (play)
2009 Whatever Works (written by)
2008 Vicky Cristina Barcelona (written by)
2007 Cassandra's Dream (written by)
2006 Scoop (written by)
2005 Match Point (written by)
2004 Melinda and Melinda (written by)
2003 Anything Else (written by)
2002 Hollywood Ending (written by)
2001 Sounds from a Town I Love (TV Short)
2001 The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (written by)
2000 Small Time Crooks (written by)
Name another director that could have that type of resume' for 14 years!
BainsBane
(53,031 posts)or the lack of it. Woody Allen is a self absorbed narcissist who makes movies that ooze with self-absorbed narcissism. He is a pedophile and a reprehensible creature that, if there is any justice, will rot in hell. He has spent his life preying on one child or adolescent after another. He does so because his mentality is that of a child, and that is evident in his films. He is entirely overrated as a director, and like every other pedophile, a blight on humanity.
bathroommonkey76
(3,827 posts)Those are some harsh words. Do you know for a fact that Mr. Allen committed these crimes? Of course you don't. You are just going by what some folks out there believe. I'll give you a minute while you collect all of the gossip magazines, Twitter screenshots, and the other lies that Mia Farrow has injected into the public psyche over the years. Now that you have everyone's attention you should present your Internet case for the world to see.
But there are millions of folks like you on the Internet each and every day blasting about something in the news. And what do those words that you type accomplish? Do you think they will be around in 50 years? Do you think scholars will have classes on each comment that you've made? Will historians of Internet comments have a Facebook page dedicated to your years of commenting? I highly doubt they will. But one thing is for sure.... Woody Allen's movies will be around even after you win your Nobel Peace Prize in Commenting About Hollywood Gossip.

(53,031 posts)and I know Allen has had a series of relationships with underage girls. One just was on television talking about it. He had naked pictures of Soon Yi and started up with her--the sister of his own children, when she was 18 (possibly younger) and in a long-term relationship with her mother.
My words accomplish nothing except one thing: they don't add to the chorus of people who accuse rape victims of lying. They resist a rape culture that shames victims and defends perpetrators, a rape culture that is carefully and deliberately constructed by disbelieving each and every rape victim that files charges or makes her case public.
Woody Allen's movies are overrated exercises in narcissism. Nothing he has made in the past twenty years is of even the most minor consequence. But even if he were a great artist, which he is not, that doesn't change the fact he is a sexual predator. Wagner was a great musician but still an anti-Semite. Leni Reifensthal was a great filmmaker and a Nazi propagandist. Their talent doesn't change what they were, and they are remembered for both. IF anyone remembers Woody Allen after he is dead, it will be as a filmmaker of middling talent who married the sister of his own children and as a child molester. My post will not be part of the historical record, but Dylan's Farrow's statement will be.
bathroommonkey76
(3,827 posts)Duke Lacrosse "victim" a few years ago. And I remember folks posting comments that were similar to what you just typed out. I personally believe that Dylan Farrow is a liar. She's just like that chick that lied about being raped at Duke; except she has a celebrity mother who is insane coaching the talking points of molestation into her ears. In the end your comment is canceled out, simply b/c it doesnt matter. None of the negative ones on the Internet accomplish anything for the poster or the site they live on.
But I will wish you good luck. Try taking that "Woody" anger and putting it to work as a volunteer at a shelter. Stewing in the recesses of negativity, hate, aren't going to get you much of anywhere in this life. But you could be one of those people that loves sinking into that quicksand. I dunno and really don't care. hahaha
Good luck!
Allen is definitely in the top 10 of directors. He's right up there with Kubrick, Ford, Welles, Hitchcock and my other favorites.

Recently, I saw "Play It Again, Sam" for the first time in a very long time. I don't think I'd buy this, so I'm glad it was on Netflix.
I enjoyed it (had a few belly laughs), but I did find him too whiny at times and the movie was a bit dated (although the idealized '70s San Francisco he portrays in this movie is a place I'd love to live in).
Among his other movies I would consider buying: "Crimes and Misdemeanors" (I loved Alan Alda in this), "Hannah and Her Sisters," "Zelig". I like some of his pre-"Annie Hall" movies but don't think I'd want to buy them. I also like some of his other films from the '80s but, again, not enough to buy them.
I really haven't had the time to see his films from the past couple decades.
