Should RadioShack Corp. close 500 stores? After all, convenience is one of its strengths.
The Wall Street Journal is quoting sources saying the Fort Worth-based retailer is planning to close that many stores, which amounts to about 11 percent of its store base in the U.S.
RadioShack spokeswoman Merianne Roth said, This is a rumor and we dont comment on rumors and speculation.
The WSJ quoted people familiar with the matter who said its not unusual for retailers to close stores as part of a restructuring. RadioShack is in the midst of a turnaround effort with new management hired last year.

Sad, I used to love to go in there and talk to the clerks when they had people who actually knew something about electronics.

(456 posts)Hopefully another electronics store takes its place, because all we have now is Walmart and a run-down Kmart.

(146,308 posts)At one time, it was a great place. They sold everything electronic, including parts for folks who were breadboarding things.
Now, they're just another cell phone store. Too many of those everywhere.
RS is toast.

(102,276 posts)THough it sure has been convenient... There are lots of things they carry that would be hard to find elsewhere, without going online.

(3,539 posts)It was NOT someplace you went just to get a first hand look at something you would buy from Amazon.com because you got a better price.
Sad for the loss of peoples jobs.
Just another case where the "job creators" lost sight of what made them successful.

(2,674 posts)I took my disabled nephew to Radio Shack to get a new phone. There was only one clerk in the store. Someone else came in and he started talking and talking and talking to this person about buying a phone. I had to find a chair for nephew so he could sit down. We waited 20 minutes and finally walked out. This is worst than bad service, it was also very bad manners, I guess the clerk's mama never taught him anything.
Then a few weeks later, I needed a converter for an old TV I was going to hook up for nephew. I went back to Radio Shack. They had a box on the shelf, but it was display, they did not have one. They sent over to another store, guess what both clerks were busy selling phones and nobody would wait on me.
How I solved both problems was to go home and buy the items on line. Good bye Radio Shack!
