We paid for 3 Sochi hotel rooms days ago, then left for 2 days on a trip (with the keys!). Came back to find guests living in all 3 rooms.

(31,241 posts)more than all the Olympics combined, according to a report on NPR. Of course, it's Russia, so most of that is rumored to have been doled out through government corruption.

(8,090 posts)"Disaster" is Syrian kids living in caves, wondering if their parents will return from their search for food. Or Syrian refugees living in Bulgaria, burning toxic plastic in their tiny huts in order to stay warm.
I look at that pic and think of my awesome stepfather. If there, he would have been yukking it up with the construction workers or hotel staff, and asking for a push broom. But this is a guy who grew up poor in Pennsylvania coal country.
Inconvenienced journalists are low on my list of concerns. As are people wealthy enough to afford the Olympics. If you don't like the pic of Putin on your dresser, stuff it in a damn drawer.
That being said, I find the money spent on modern Olympics rather obscene, whether Sochi or not.

(65,490 posts)its pride to the world, as China did, by putting on a heckuva show and covering up all the negative stuff that everyone knows is there below the surface.
But now I think maybe he really and truly doesn't care what the world thinks, and that the whole point of getting the Olympic bid was to have a chance to shovel $50 billion to his cronies, to give them even more reasons to continue supporting him. (No doubt his own bank account has grown noticeably, as well.)
If he meant for the Olympics to showcase Russian competence, then obviously this is the most massive fail imaginable. But if he really doesn't give any more of a sh** than ol' honey badger does, then he and his buddies have won.
One good thing could maybe come out of this: the IOC is famous for being corrupt. Maybe this will draw more scrutiny to the way venues are awarded.
BTW, I bet Brazil is going to be a big fat fail, too.
