I'm on the Gulf Coast. We have huge chunks of sleet falling all over the place, and it's going to hard, it sounds like hail almost.

Checked it at like 10:00 last night. Woke up this morning and was like, WTF?

(9,463 posts)related to this snowfall. Same exact thing. When I woke up this morning, there's a small space in the blinds and it looked particularly bright outside. I thought, that's the sort of bright that only comes with a winter snow. I got up, looked out, and what do you know? "Stupid weather app!"
But I like it. Something quiet, soothing, and peaceful about a gentle snow. I only wish I was in a cabin in the woods with a fire and a cappuccino before a great picture window - instead of a suburban apartment.

(39,961 posts)awful little Isuzu pickup trucks can make it through anything. They are bare-bones, and we had water going over the hood of one in a flood, and the sucker kept going. It was just a plain commercial stick shift small pickup, and that thing made it through EVERYTHING. It's still hanging around, too. It's far from a nice ride, but it will get you from point A to point B no matter what is going on.
I'm pretty sure this little ugly pickup could go through Armageddon and still turn over.

which is not the case where I'm at, though Livingston is roughly 110 miles from here. It's calm as can be here, thank goodness! Because -37F is cold enough, I have the stove going full bore and I can only get it up to about +65F in the cabin. I'm wearing some interesting duds at the moment! And I'll have to get out to the shed to get some more wood in the next hour, it's snowmobile suit weather just to walk outside, to hell with the snowmobiles and the wind chill factor! And I'm up along the divide, 25 hundred - ft higher in elevation.
It's supposed to warm up and snow tomorrow. And up into the +20F temps this weekend. Not starting the vehicle until it's in the double digits on the right side of 0!! I could if need be but my Toyota is old and I want to make it last as long as I can. I will go out and either hike or ski a few miles for exercise in a couple hours regardless of the temps. I don't mind the cold as long as it isn't every day all winter, and I don't care how deep the snow gets and can deal with that easier than the extreme cold.
But the serious cold might help kill off some of the bark beetles and that would be a good thing which I am willing to endure the cold for.
ETA: On my afternoon outing down to the root cellar I ran into my landlord there and we chatted about the temperature last night, he wanted to know if I was able to stay warm. He said that his digital thermometer was reading -48F this morning!!
I thought it was a little colder than my cheap, spring loaded unit outside was indicating. I think it freezes up at about -25F though the lowest temp on the graph is -65F. Oh well, its supposed to only get -20F tonight so it will probably be close to -50F again. Brought in more wood, landlord said he'd bring some more up tomorrow.

(86,586 posts)there are snowbanks higher than 13'6" semi trailers around here and you HAVE to have a loader of some sort to move the snow around in a small driveway, and a place to pile it up. I have to park down at the end of the road/driveway so the sun will be on the hood of the vehicle during the day.
We haven't had nearly enough snow, I can see over the snowbanks and piles... a storm dumping 3+ ft is normal but not this year.
All the snow seems to have fallen far east of the Rockies this winter, but then most of the frigid cold went there too - that's our usual fare.
