A strike by shirtwaist workers primarily immigrant women and girls in Philadelphias garment sweatshops ends. Despite mass arrests, intimidation, scabs, and media blasts against them, the workers refused to back down until their demands for improved working conditions, reduce working hours, increased wages, and union recognition were met. About Today In Labor History
The NHLN has joined with multiple other websites to help highlight some of the struggles that workers have faced throughout our history. We want everyone to know what the workers of the past had to endure for the rights we take for granted now. If you do not learn from the past, you are doomed to repeat it.

There have been a few stories about workers trying to assert themselves lately, but not nearly enough.

IT doesn't seem as bad as it was 10 years go maybe but it's still pretty bad. But surely people eventually have to realize that waiting for the Federal Government to step in isn't going to work.

(17,621 posts)4. I am honestly surprised . . .
That there hasn't been serious trouble in WV over what Freedom Industries has done to the water supply. I really am. The coal industry still owns that state the way it did a century ago, and we all know what that led to.
