Wow. You thought these incidents were non-existent after the 2004 Pacers-Pistons brawl. Well guess what?
He was being helped up after flying into the crowd during a shot-blocking attempt when he turned around and responded to something a Tech fan said.
The fan who got shoved was profiled by the Texas Tech alumni magazine in 2010.

(4,868 posts)Just a guy tired of being called a faggot and watching friends and bullying victims kill themselves. Some of us are tired of being told to sit back and take racism and homophobia, meanwhile it's killing some of us. Maybe next time some redneck keys my car, or calls me a faggot outside a club I'll just sit there and take it like a good little liberal pacifist.

If I said said something racist or hateful (not saying this guy did) I would say I deserved it.

I'm sure the twitter universe is overflowing with outrage and racism by now though.

(549 posts)And actually Twitter is flooded with people pulling the race card already. It makes us look bad quite frankly. We don't know what happened.

(4,868 posts)I'm not sure who is playing the race card. If someone said something racist to me while I was full of adrenalin they would get more than a shove, so I can see more than one thing that would justify a love shove. Could have been worse, he apologized.

he has earned a reputation for being very emotional, and not particularly mature about it. Most knowledgeable college hoops fans will agree to that observation. Either way, his actions are unacceptable and he will be sitting a game or two. Finally, pro fans are ruthless. If he wants to show he is ready for that level, he needs to show more restraint.

(4,868 posts)And the fact that he apologized shows that he knows he overreacted.
That being said, this whole "I should be able to say whatever bigoted stuff I want and face zero repercussions" mindset is baffling.
Violence should always be a last resort, but people can only be pushed and bullied so much.

(17,862 posts)I remember being at a baseball game once as a teenager and a little kid had a banner for the visiting team. One of the home fans snatched the banner from the kid and stomped on it (I think it was an Angels home game). I also got several nasty comments when I was a teenager and cheered for the Reds at a Dodgers game. In hind sight I probably could have gotten beat up since I was at the alone basically alone (I traveled with a church group but I did not have any friends in it).
It is not a new phenomenon. Smart should not have shoved him and probably will get a suspension, but, unless Smart is unhinged, the guy probably said something really bad to him.

(62,411 posts)I think this whole asshole fan thing is way out of hand.
Smart will probably get some punishment from his team, plus apparently he did apologize.
But I think Texas Tech could send a loud message that this type of neanderthal behavior is no longer acceptable and take away that guy's tickets. After an investigation of course.
I don't condone the OSU player's actions---but the profile of that Tech fan portrays a major-league douchebag, the kind of sports fanatic who will be milking this altercation for free bar tabs for the rest of his so-called life.....
