Did we already launch Operation FEMA Camp and if we did then why is Hannity still on the air and not in a camp???

(10,893 posts)who loathes bike paths. My big sister does, too, and she's about as liberal as they come. Recently in East Oakland, they've made bike paths around the Mills College area and elsewhere. She told me the reason why she hates them is because not only are they wider than the car lanes, but there are hardly any bikers ever using them. Personally I have to agree with her, and I don't even drive. All they seem to be doing is making the traffic more congested for nothing. It is a low-income area where those lanes are in, so not too many people are going to be biking. I'm not against making bike lanes, but the City should at least make them in places where they know that a good number of people will use them.

(36,827 posts)Often the ones placed next to traffic lanes don't allow enough room to bike on them safely, or they create dangerous intersections that aren't much better than riding on the sidewalk.
Others that are built off the traffic lanes are really multi-use paths rather than bike paths. This means that if you are riding your bike on them you stand a good chance of eventually rounding a bend and finding someone with one of those retractable dog leashes stretched across the path or a kid on a big wheel. They also tend to create dangerous road crossings for bikes.
There are some places that have designed some really good bike paths. I've also seen some areas that have built an entire network of multi-use paths that have few road crossings and are designed for people to use electric vehicles. Peachtree City, GA has a really nice system and all sorts of people do their local commuting by golf cart.

(45,851 posts)The people I see where I live actually using a bicycle for practical everyday transportation to work/shopping/etc rather than just as a sport or recreation tend to be low income.
We have bike paths here but they were clearly laid out just for recreational cycling and not for transportation, they don't go anywhere near the main shopping strip for one thing and that area is extremely dangerous on a bicycle.
