McDonald's opens first outlet in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh

Fast-food giant McDonald's - often seen as a symbol of American capitalism - has opened its first restaurant in communist-controlled Vietnam.

Hundreds of people queued for the opening of the restaurant in the southern city of Ho Chi Minh, AFP says.

Ho Chi Minh, known as Saigon during the Vietnam War, was where the US-backed government was based until it fell to communist forces 38 years ago.

The restaurant is being run by the prime minister's son-in-law.

I was in Hanoi in 1992 and it was very drab and little business was going on. I was there recently and it was a very energetic city. I saw many shops with a five foot Statue of Liberty model in front of them. Quite a few had U.S. flags along with the flag of Vietnam. I went into a restaurant in Saigon and saw a huge picture of Bill Clinton eating there.

When I was in Saigon in 1992 there was a museum of "The Museum of U.S and Chinese War Crimes". Now the museum is still there but renamed. It is now " The Museum of Chinese War Crimes."

Hundreds of thousands died for something that ended up happening anyway.
