The ship was not in the best of shape when they left port either from what I recall. A real shame, and I was looking forward to seeing her.

and were taking greater and greater risks with questionable seaworthiness...

However, ultimately the responsibility lies with the captain. He knew the condition of the boat better than anyone. He knew the crew was inexperienced and shorthanded. And yet he put to sea into the path of the storm anyway.

One of the main takeaways is that the storm would probably have been survivable if the ship and crew were better prepared.

it remains that they shouldn't have been out there at all, whether the storm was "survivable" or not. All to often, what is normally a survivable situation becomes not so, due to several small incidents and errors compounding into a major situation.
