The closest Crist gets to controversy, something I left out of the review, comes in a collection of musings about the rise of the Tea Party. Crist has trouble understanding the alacrity with which anti-Obama anger became so mainstream.
Sometimes, he says, the publics feelings seemed partly racial. Sometimes, Im sure they were not. But Barack Obama was the first African American in the White House. Florida had helped to put him there. And it was impossible to imagine an equal measure of virulence for any politician whose skin was white.

(15,438 posts)There is no ifs, ands, or buts. No one can deny, be it openly or in private, that this unprecedented opposition to President Obama is all about racism no matter how they try to excuse it (unconvincingly) using the weakest arguments around that just ring hollow.
Charlie Crist hit the nail on the head, and I'm happy to read that he's unafraid to call it like it is.

(56,177 posts)In his defense, the nutjobs opposed everything Clinton did, too, so there's craziness in this without the racism, but there's definitely a lot of racims in this particular craziness.
