California Dem proposes $13 dollar minimum wage in response to Obama's SOTU speech!!

Employers statewide may be required to raise wage levels if the new bill is passed

A recent bill proposed by California state Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) could raise the state’s minimum wage from the current rate of $8 per hour to $11 per hour by 2015.

The bill is designed to continually raise minimum wage to $12 per hour in 2016 and $13 per hour in 2017 with annual adjustments made based on inflation rates beginning in 2018.

Leno co-authored the bill, also known as SB 935, with Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento). It will be discussed in Senate policy committees in the coming spring.

Leno states that his decision to propose the bill was in response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address given last week. In his speech, Obama urged mayors, governors and state legislators to take a proactive stance in raising minimum wage.

to even have one, and still not live a reasonably comfortable life. Wealth inequality of the proportions that exist today is simply immoral.

The fact that this proposal comes from a large state like California is great because the state can lead the way when it comes to things like minimum wage.

Dems need to work together at all levels of government throughout the country.

The article makes it sound like the bill will raise the minimum wage from $8 to $12 per hour by 2016, an increase of $4 per hour over what we have now. In reality, however, California has already passed a minimum wage increase that will hike the minimum wage to $10 per hour by 2016. What Leno is proposing is an additional $2 per hour increase over what is already slated.

Don't get me wrong, I wholly support Leno's move and hope it passes, but the misrepresentation bothered me. Jerry Brown and a lot of other people fought hard to get the current increases passed last year, and the article would seemingly credit the entire proposed increase to Leno's legislation, ignoring those who have already fought for much of it. Our base minimum wage actually goes up to $9 an hour this July 1, as the first "step" in the wage increases.

for inflation, which CA does need to implement. Oregon does it, every year it climbs, currently we are at 9.10 an hour. WA also does the same, 9.30 an hour right now there. CA will nearly catch up in July!
