Russia's new homophobic laws are a disgrace to everything the Olympics stand for.
This is a dangerous time for the LGBT community in Russia and the LGBT individuals competing in Sochi from across the world that have been working towards this moment most of their lives.
We want to get 500,000 people sending them the message that we are standing with them.

I loved this book.
The Heart is a lonely hunter with only one desire! To find some lasting comfort in the arms of anothers fire...driven by a desperate hunger to the arms of a neon light, the heart is a lonely hunter when there's no sign of love in sight!

(22,000 posts)But I think Russia has already pretty much gotten away with the whitewash of several issues (the other ones being worker's rights, environmental rights, displacement of people, corruption, the killing of the dogs, etc.).
For all the people on DU that rail against the US, it is Russia that is getting away with murder.

Justice Department To Launch Push For Full Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage
snip//
"In an assertion of same-sex marriage rights, Attorney General Eric Holder is applying a landmark Supreme Court ruling to the Justice Department, announcing Saturday that same-sex spouses cannot be compelled to testify against each other, should be eligible to file for bankruptcy jointly and are entitled to the same rights and privileges as federal prison inmates in opposite-sex marriages. The Justice Department runs a number of benefits programs, and Holder says same-sex couples will qualify for them. They include the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and benefits to surviving spouses of public safety officers who suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries in the line of duty."

(11,065 posts)That's like saying "Stand with women during the Olympics!" or "Stand with dark skinned people during the Olympics!". I stand with LGBT members 24/7 day in, day out as I would certainly hope that everyone at least on DU does. Either you stand with them all the time or you just don't stand with them, period.
What a very odd thing to say.

(83,898 posts)Nor did I mean it to be offensive, which I think you are saying that it is.
I have stood for AA, LGBT and Women fights for my whole life. I posted this as support to LGBT athletes at The Olympics. My support does not end when they are over, nor did it start when the went to compete at the games.

(53,987 posts)I know your name, other GLBT persons here know your name, you are recognized as an ally! We needed to see this type of support given the slap in the face type of posts calling us names for daring to stand up to homophobia!
Rock ON!

(83,898 posts)It's just beyond my scope of understanding that anyone would deny a person this very basic right.
Love, humanity and dignity. It belongs to all of us.

(11,065 posts)"Stand with LGBT people" isn't what was said. The OP said to stand with them during the Olympics as if I or anyone else wouldn't be standing with them at any other time otherwise there isn't any reason to use the clarifier 'during the Olympics'. Making it specific to the Olympics is what makes the statement specific to the Olympics. I don't think that's likely what the OP meant - that people should only stand with LGBT people only during the Olympics - but there's no question that using the clarifying phrase 'during the Olympics' gives the appearance of only standing with them during the Olympics or somehow standing with them more during the Olympics. It's a weird ambiguous thing to say.
I don't care that nobody else here noticed that (or maybe they did and just didn't say anything). It was an ambiguous thing to say, and what do I know what the OP thinks about standing with LGBT people or for some reason if we should somehow stand with them more during the Olympics or what. Either you stand with them just as strongly all the time or you don't.
