Bachmann Opposes Reform Because Immigrants Aren't Republicans
I can add no commentary to this other than to facepalm before slamming my head on the desk.
Bachmann: "[Immigration reform] would change the dynamic of the United States forever. Let's face it. If these were conservative Republicans that were coming illegally into the United States, the last thing President Obama would do is seek to give amnesty and citizenship and legal voting status to the people who were coming into the country."
So Bachmann is opposing it because immigrants aren't conservative Republicans, right? That "dynamic" she's so afraid of is the one where the nativists lose.

(24,692 posts)attention is paid, in that portrayal, to the role that 'good white immigrants' played in the genocide of a huge part of that 'diversity'. (I meant "good white" immigrants from a republican point of view; not a liberal point of view. Sorry for the confusion.)
Of course, "current" (whether 'current' is today or 100 or 200 or 300 years ago) immigrants are almost always perceived negatively. Current immigrants often considered as a threat to jobs, wages, culture, religion, etc. Whether you were a German, Irish or Italian immigrant long ago or a Hispanic or Asian immigrant today, the welcome mat was almost never really out for you.
170 years ago the Know-Nothings based their whole political movement on eliminating immigration. republicans did the same with the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 and the Immigration Act of 1924. Democrats repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1943 and liberalized immigration with the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, but large parts of our party are still leery of the economic impact of immigrants.
For better or worse, relatively few Americans have ever really endorsed the whole ""Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free ..." as much more than idealistic rhetoric.
