A Denmark zoo says that it has no plans to kill one of its healthy male giraffes after its European governing body decided not to send the zoo a female giraffe for the purposes of breeding.
The Jyllands Park Zoo said in a statement on its Facebook pageThursday that it would spare the giraffe after the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) informed officials that it would not be receiving a female "any time soon."
"As a result of this we will of course keep both our giraffes, as we have stated all along," the statement said. "There is no plan, and there has never been a plan to neither move or euthanize any of our giraffes."
The zoo sparked outcries earlier this week when it said that a 7-year-old male giraffe named Marius would have to be put down if the zoo received a female.

They would have though.
I still don 't understand this.
I understand not wanting to inbreed the giraffes.
I even understand using the meat for the lions.
There is a wildlife park in England with a state-of-the-art giraffe house. They could use another one. If they are certified and do treat their animals properly, why not send it there?

(769 posts)a neutered giraffe would take up scarce space and resources. Forget where I saw it, but it sounded like doublespeak to me. *shrug*

Maybe they need to just rethink the whole mess. Look around and find a home for the darn thing, or give it the snip. I think it's horrible to cage/confine a wild creature in the first place, I much prefer those sorts of parks where they put the PEOPLE in the cage and drive them round to look at the animals roaming free!
