EDEN, N.C. (AP) Duke Energy says a second pipe under a coal ash dump in North Carolina is not in immediate danger of collapse, despite concerns from state regulators that the pipe could fail and trigger another toxic spill into the Dan River.
The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources said Friday that video taken inside the pipe shows potentially contaminated water leaking in through gaps and then out into the river.
Duke spokeswoman Paige Sheehan says the company's assessment is that "no immediate action" is necessary. The state has given Duke 10 days to come up with a plan to fix the leaks.
The third largest coal ash spill in U.S. history was triggered Feb. 2 when a similar pipe at Duke's dump collapsed.

(11,441 posts)I should have, I suppose, but staying in bed with WCPE, a hot chai and the N&O was infinitely more enjoyable. I can barely stomach him, let alone on a peaceful Sunday morning.

(11,441 posts)my reaction to him is visceral, like with George W.
So much is wrong with him and the NC GOP, but fudging the unemployment numbers and the big "comeback" is just total effin' BULLSHIT.

(84,711 posts)McCrory was on to talk about the snowstorm and Schieffer asked him about a statement he made about climate change being in the "hands of God." McCrory said that wasn't a full quote of what he'd said.
Then Schieffer allowed McCrory to talk about keeping North Carolina's Air and Water Clean without it affecting the NC economy and never once mentioned or bothered to ask him about the Dan River Toxic Ash Spill. He also didn't mention that McCrory worked for Duke Energy for 28 years when he asked him about power outages during the storm.

(11,441 posts)It's gorgeous and sunny and after skimming the bonobo sex thread (!), I need to step the hell away from the computer and go for a long walk. Or go have some ape sex. I'm so confused.
I knew the winter storm would be a topic, but figured the ash spill would also be addressed. How could it not?! Silly me.
calling that an interview is really stretching it..
