Fire Sale on Cards Stolen in Target Breach

Card data stolen from Target diving in value

The latest sale on Target Corp. merchandise? All those stolen credit and debit card accounts, which are quickly being discounted as banks move to cancel the numbers.
That's the word from Brian Krebs, the security blogger who first blew the whistle on the Target data breach. In a new post, Krebs says the criminals behind the theft have moved "huge volumes of cards onto underground markets and at cut-rate prices."
Cards that sold for $26 to $44 back in December are now going for as little as $6.
The reason? More and more banks are canceling the account numbers and issuing new cards — an expensive step, but one that makes the stolen numbers worthless.

Good grief, I wish I could have paid the crooks to get my stolen card info returned. I would have gladly paid them more then they evidently got for my stolen info.
My recommendation on which stolen bank card to buy? Get the PNC cards.
My PNC VISA card was duplicated and used yesterday in Florida. My account was cleaned out, several hundred dollars gone before my account was frozen.
Earlier this week I was in my PNC branch and had again inquired if I should apply for a new card. Again I was advised that ihere was very little risk that my stolen card would ever be used. No need to get a new card they said two days ago.

This is one of the latest e-mails I received from PNC concerning the Target breach.

To Our Valued Customers,
The security and confidentiality of our customers is the highest priority for everyone at PNC. We care about our customers and take very seriously our commitment to ensuring your credit, checking and savings accounts are as safe as they can be.
When we learned of a significant security breach across the entire chain of Target stores, we acted immediately to step up monitoring of debit and credit card transactions, and to identify every customer who had used their PNC check card or credit card at a Target store between November 27 and December 15.
Our research indicates you were one of those customers, and though this security breach was at Target, we see protecting your financial well being as our business. You should feel free to continue using your PNC check or credit card for the things you always do while we work to help assure your security.
Here is what we think you should know:
• There is no need to replace your card at this time unless you see unauthorized charges on your account. The vast majority of customers are unlikely to experience any unauthorized charges as a result of this security breach.
• PNC uses sophisticated technologies to identify and stop most fraud. If we see suspicious activity on your account, we will step in and notify you.
........and more which I'm not including here.

OK, I did get notified but only after "merchandise was released" and my account is near emptied. PNC I believe will replace the stolen funds from my account but I have to wait 7 -10 days.
Wish I had just insisted on them replacing my card earlier.

This last Monday was the third time I had inquired at the PNC bank about when or if they were replacing the cards that they had clearly identified as being at risk. There was or possibly still is a large placard positioned at the bank's entrance advising those at risk customers to "not apply for a replacement card". It’s surprising to me that so many people have still not canceled cards that were included in the Target breach. I kept thinking that just because my credit card offers $0 liability on fraudulent purchases doesn’t mean its safe to continue with the same card. I told the bank employee I'm constantly checking my card activity online for questionable purchases every other day which is crazy. Just please give me a replacement card.
